PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger might not just be at the controls of the NFLs most dynamic offense, but perhaps its most democratic. When the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is in the pocket -- and sometimes when hes not -- he doesnt do a quick rundown of each options resume. He searches for the best matchup and he fires. Thats pretty much it.Ive been in the league long enough to know every single receiver is open on every single play, Roethlisberger said with a laugh.Even when theyre not, though that hasnt been the case often during Pittsburghs 2-0 start, a testament to Roethlisbergers rising confidence in what may be the leagues best set of weapons even with Martavis Bryant sitting out the entire season because of a violation of the NFLs substance abuse policy. The proof is in the box score. Roethlisberger spread his 19 completions in last Sundays 24-16 victory over Cincinnati to nine players. When the Bengals made it clear their focus was slowing down the seemingly unstoppable Antonio Brown, Roethlisberger stretched the field by going deep to Sammie Coates and having 6-foot-7 Jesse James and 6-4 Xavier Grimble basically posting up in the red zone .Even backup running back Fitzgerald Toussaint and blocking tight end David Johnson got at least one ball their way.Are they going to get their yards? Yeah theyre going to get their yards, said Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson, whose team hosts Pittsburgh on Sunday.Theyre too good not to get them and Bens too good to not get the ball to them. Hes utilizing a lot of those guys and hes getting the ball out of his hands fast. And to think Markus Wheaton -- the No. 2 receiver -- hasnt played a snap yet while nursing a sprained shoulder and LeVeon Bell -- is out one more week while serving a drug suspension.Everybodys got a different aspect they bring to the game, Coates said. Thats whats so good about our group. One in which Coates is doing a pretty good job filling the void as the deep threat while Bryant tries to get his career back on track.A fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft, Coates spent the majority of his rookie season watching from the sideline in sweatpants after failing to make the active roster on game days. It was a humbling experience being healthy, but deemed not essential. When you first get in the league, youve got a lot to learn, Coates said. Youve got to compete. And earn Roethlisbergers trust too. Their budding chemistry was on full display against Cincinnati, when Roethlisberger escaped pressure and rolled to his left before dropping a rainbow that Coates hauled in over his shoulder for a 44-yard gain .A year ago, Coates probably doesnt turn upfield almost instinctively at the site of his quarterback in trouble. Not anymore. There was no hesitation, Roethlisberger said. I kind of pointed for him to go deep and he took off right away and made a great play. Thats some really good positive stuff you see from a young guy who hasnt had a lot of experience and playing time with me.It helps that the Steelers do their best to simulate those situations in practice. There are times when the play breaks down and instead of blowing the whistle, the coaches let Roethlisberger and the receivers ad lib.He also makes it a point to find role players even when theyre not the first (or second or third for that matter) read so they remain engaged.Grimble hadnt caught a pass in a game that counted since his junior year at USC in 2013 and yet Roethlisberger didnt hesitate when he saw Grimble lined up one-on-one late in the first quarter, a play that ended with Grimble stretching across the goal line for a 20-yard score .Im throwing to every one of them every day, multiple times. For me, when theyre out there I should know whos out there. It should just be a constant flow of whose going. I have faith in all them and they have faith in me that we can get it done.Even on the rare occasions when Brown cant quite seem to get going. The Bengals held the All-Pro to four receptions, Browns fewest in a game Roethlisberger has started since final game of the 2012 regular season.Brown was diplomatic afterward while admitting he would have preferred to see more action. Thats just AB being AB.Hes helping us even when hes catching three or four balls, Roethlisberger said. Hes taking a lot of attention away from other guys.Game notes Wheaton participated and is optimistic hell play against the Eagles. ... RIO DE JANEIRO -- It seems everywhere you turn in track and field right now theres bad news. Two days before the track competition starts at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, IAAF President Sebastian Coe said Wednesday that hes not confident there will be full crowds. Are we going to have full houses? I dont know the answer to that, Coe said. The Rio crowds could have given Coe a rare positive to highlight in a news conference that was almost completely about the negatives: Doping, banned athletes, previously banned dopers being able to compete in Rio, and what the IAAF is doing to change the way it works after 12 months that rocked the sport and its governing body to the core. Along with the huge doping scandal in Russia -- Coe called it cataclysmic -- corruption crept into the IAAF, too, under former president Lamine Diack.Yes, the last year has sorely tested all of us and Im very clear about it, it has sorely tested our fans and supporters out there, Coe said. We have to be mindful of where weve come from, but our responsibility now is to shape the future. Many of the questions posed to Coe at the IAAFs beachside hotel in Ipanema dealt with how the International Olympic Committee had taken different approaches to the IAAF when it came to Russias extensive state-sponsored doping scheme.Coe tread carefully, but hinted at what are clearly differing opinions between the two.One of the issues presented to Coe: Doping whistleblower and 800-meter runner Yuliya Stepanova, who was crucial in helping to reveal Russias wrongdoing, wasnt allowed by the IOC to compete at the Olympics while sprinter Justin Gatlin, banned twice for doping, can.It is the IOCs event, Coe said. But he also offered this: If athletes are prepared to stick theiir heads above the parapet and help, then we should recognize that.ddddddddddddSpeaking about Gatlin, Coe, who would prefer dopers be banned for life, said: I cant change my view on that, but he is eligible to compete and he should be accorded the same courtesy that any athlete within those codes and those rules is accorded. And Coe was asked about the IOCs decision to back away from a ban on all Russian competitors at the Olympics despite the countrys state-sponsored doping, when the IAAF took the bold decision to ban all Russian track and field athletes.Organizations made judgments that they presumably felt was in the best interests of those organizations, Coe said. We certainly made a judgment in athletics. The IOC made a judgment, it was endorsed by IOC members, and Im not sure I can add any more than that.Where the IOC and the IAAF are together is a preference for life bans for serial dopers -- someone like Gatlin. Following IOC President Thomas Bachs announcement that the Olympic body might pursue the possibility of life bans again -- life bans have twice been struck down by sports highest court -- Coe said the IAAF would be open to that. With the body facing a long road back to winning fans trust, the IAAF council had this week ratified proposals to change the way it works, Coe said. Those proposals will go to a special congress of all the sports national federations in December to be voted on and hopefully, he said, approved. The changes included setting up a body completely independent of the IAAF to deal with the sports doping and ethics issues. No change was not an option, Coe said.
