DETROIT -- With his team down by a goal after two periods, Philadelphia Flyers coach Craig Berube had a message for his team. "Stay out of the penalty box," Berube said he told his players between the second and third periods. Apparently, they listened. Sean Couturier had two goal and two assists and the Philadelphia Flyers scored four goals in third period to rally for a 6-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. "I liked our game (after two periods), we were playing a good game," Berube said. "You cant go in the box three or four times period and give them 5-on-3s." The Flyers took five penalties and surrendered a 5-on-3 power-play goal in the second. Couturier got the winner at 8:28 of the third period by tipping in a shot. "Its (his big night) good for the confidence. But this was a team game and team success," Couturier said. "All four lines were rolling. We just wanted to get some chances and capitalize on some chances." Couturiers line had a big night as his linemates, Scott Hartnell and Matt Read, each had a goal and two assists. "They just keep plugging along and doing the right things," Berube said about the group. "They keep back-checking and that puts them in the right position for offence." Steve Downie and Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist each for Philadelphia. Steve Mason stopped 32 shots. Philadelphia finished 3 for 3 on the power play. Tomas Tatar scored twice and centre Johan Franzen also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves. "In the end I thought we had things going pretty good for ourselves through two. The third period wasnt good enough, they were better than us," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "They were better than us because they lit us up on the power play." Giroux tied it at 3, with a power-play goal 5:15 into the third period. He got his fifth goal, on a shot from the top of the left circle. Hartnell made it 5-3 with a power-play goal 9:58 into the third for his sixth goal. Couturier added an empty-net goal in the last minute. Read scored from the front of the net with 3:22 remaining in the second to pull the Flyers within 3-2. It was his ninth goal. Detroit scored twice in less than two minutes in the middle of the second period to go up 3-1. Franzen beat Mason with a slap shot from the top of the left circle off the rush to break a tie at 8:24. It was Franzens eighth goal. Tatar got his second goal of the game on a 5-on-3 power play by putting in a loose puck from a goal-mouth scramble with 9:47 left in the middle period. It was Tatars fifth goal. The Red Wings Justin Abdelkader hit the post on a partial breakaway with 1:32 left in the first. Tatars first goal of the game opened the scoring with 9:43 left in the opening period on a one-time shot from the bottom of the left circle. Downies power-play goal tied it with 6:12 remaining in the first period. He beat Howard with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle. It was Downies second goal. NOTE: The Red Wings were without both of their star centres, Pavel Datsyuk and captain Henrik Zetterberg. Datsyuk missed his fifth game with a concussion and Zetterberg sat out his first game because of a herniated disc in his back. Zetterberg is expected to miss at least two weeks. ... Flyers C Vincent Lecavalier missed his second game with back spasms. ... Detroit RW Todd Bertuzzi missed his sixth game with an upper-body injury. ... Philadelphia RW Adam Hall is from Kalamazoo and played at Michigan State. .. Red Wings D Danny Dekeyser, who has missed seven games and is on the long-term IR with a separated left shoulder, began skating on Wednesday morning. ... Detroit LW Justin Abdelkader went to the locker room late in the second period after being shoved into the boards from behind by Flyers defenceman Luke Schenn, who got a charging penalty. Abdelkader returned in the third. Anton Stralman Jersey . "[People] keep asking that question and its not a legit question because we dont have that right, we havent arrived yet," Casey responded. "Weve got to take each game at a time, each possession at a time and look at it that way. Andrei Vasilevskiy Jersey . Canada wasnt in the game from the outset. Head coach Dan Church left Calgary in the morning without addressing the players. He told The Canadian Press he felt the organization lacked confidence in his ability to defend the Olympic gold medal in February. Tampa Bay Lightning Jerseys . Tristan Jackson returned a missed field goal 129 yards early in the fourth quarter as the Roughriders beat the B.C.WASHINGTON - After three straight walk-offs, the Washington Nationals went for a cakewalk instead. Sure, winning late over and over again is a thrill, but its not good for the blood pressure — not to mention the workload of the bullpen. Stephen Strasburg provided much of the salve Tuesday night, allowing one run and three hits over a season-high eight innings as the Nationals ran their winning streak to eight games with an 8-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "I guess its what the doctor ordered," Strasburg said. That, along with a six-run third inning. Asdrubal Cabreras bases-clearing double blew the game open, giving Washington an overdue breather in what is now its longest winning run since August 2012. "I think were just coming together," said shortstop Ian Desmond, who had four RBIs. "Weve kind of established our way, I guess you would say." Success had come with suspense for the Nats: four consecutive one-run games, including the last three decided by the final at-bat, and the last two in the 11th inning. But Strasburg (10-10) did just what the Nationals needed him to do: eat up innings to give the overtaxed relievers a break. He struck out four to give him an NL-leading 198 for the season, besting his previous single-season high of 197 in 2012 — the year he was shut down early after returning from elbow surgery. "The way Stephen pitched is, I hope, indicative of what were going to see in the future," Desmond said. "Hes been great a lot in his career, but tonight was one of those games where it was really fun to watch." The Nationals sent seven batters to the plate in the third before the Diamondbacks could record an out. Rookie Chase Anderson (7-5) faced six of them, allowing five singles and a walk beefore he was pulled in the shortest outing of his young career.dddddddddddd. Jayson Werths broken-bat single up the middle scored the first Nationals run, and Desmonds single brought in two more. After Bryce Harpers single loaded the bases, Anderson was pulled for Eury De La Rosa, who gave up Cabreras drive that took one bounce before hitting the wall in right-centre. "I just kind of didnt attack the guys like I should attack," Anderson said. "I think if you execute pitches and get ahead, you can kind of get anybody out. Thats just the name of the game." David Peraltas first-inning home run accounted for all the scoring for the Diamondbacks, who have lost four straight. MAYBE I SHOULDNT TELL THE SKIPPER Nationals manager Matt Williams praised Desmonds ability to "shorten down" on a swing that produced a pair of runs: "Hes going to get a bunch of homers, we know that, but when he can take a two-run single, hes feeling it and hes seeing the ball good." Oops. Turns out it was totally an accident. Desmond said he was just trying to fight off a pitch. "I dont know if I chose to shorten up," Desmond said. "I think the jammage probably shortened me up a little bit." ENDERS END GAME Diamondbacks CF Ender Inciarte grounded out in the ninth to finish an 0-for-4 night, ending his team rookie record hitting streak at 18 games. TRAINERS ROOM Nationals OF Nate McLouth will have surgery Thursday for a torn labrum in his right shoulder and is done for the year. He hit .173 with one home run and seven RBIs in 79 games in his first season in Washington. UP NEXT Arizonas Trevor Cahill (3-8, 4.68 ERA) faces Tanner Roark (12-7, 2.93) on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game set.
