PORTLAND, Ore. -- Andrew Jean-Baptiste scored in stoppage time to give the Portland Timbers a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night. Jean-Baptistes header got past Los Angeles goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini as the game wound to a close after Ryan Johnson had evened the score at 1-all in the 27th minute. Jean-Baptiste doffed his shirt in celebration after his game-winner, his first goal of the season. First-year Timbers coach Caleb Porter flashed a thumbs-up to the crowd. With the victory, Portland moved into second place in the Western Conference behind Real Salt Lake. The Galaxy were without forward Landon Donovan, who is playing with the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Donovan scored his 53rd career international goal and the United States defeated Cuba 4-1 in Salt Lake City earlier on Saturday. The Timbers were without Will Johnson and Rodney Wallace, both playing for Canada in the Gold Cup. Frederic Piquionne, who played in Martiniques first two Gold Cup games, was listed as a reserve for Portland against the Galaxy. The Galaxy had won two straight, including a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas at home last Sunday. The Timbers were coming off a 1-0 road loss to the Columbus Crew last weekend, which snapped a 15-match undefeated streak for Portland under Porter. The Galaxy went ahead 1-0 on Marcelo Sarvas well-placed header in the 18th minute. The Timbers had not conceded a goal at Jeld-Wen Field in a league game since March 9. Portland tied it when Darlington Nagbe fed a free kick to a charging Ryan Johnson to beat Cudicini. It was Ryan Johnsons goal of the season, tying him with Will Johnson for the team lead. Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts defended a dangerously close penalty kick from Juninho, tipping it over the goal in the 37th minute. A few moments later, Ricketts came far out of the goal for a sliding stop on Gyasi Zardes breakaway. He made another key save on another Zardes attempt in the 82nd minute Attendance was announced at 20,674 for the Timbers 43rd consecutive sellout. LONDON -- Carl Froch won a unanimous decision over Mikkel Kessler in a super middleweight title unification bout on Saturday night, avenging his first career defeat and adding the WBA championship to his IBF belt. Fighting in front of a partisan crowd at the sold-out O2 Arena, Froch (47-2, 35 KOs) started quickly and survived several spots of trouble to hold off Kessler (30-3), who beat the Englishman in a thrilling decision in April 2010. The rematch also was highly entertaining, with Froch appearing to hurt Kessler with a series of right hands in the eighth round. The Danish fighter stormed back in the 11th round with several rocking shots, but Froch replied with a punishing 12th-round performance, getting close to stopping Kessler. "Youve got to have a game plan, but I didnt get hit with too many shots in there," Froch said. "Kessler got hit with too many himself, and that was the big difference." All three judges favoured the 35-year-old Froch, scoring it 115-113, 116-112 and 118-110. "(Kessler) is a good counterpuncher," Froch said. "The main difference was, in the first fight, I was backing up. I was letting him dictate the pace. I was letting him push me back. "I was meeting him as he came (in the rematch), and I was being aggressive with the jab. Froch dictated the pace until Kessler went for a knockout in the 11th round, but Froch responded with a dominant final round. Froch and Kessler are among the top contenders in a division widely thought to be ruled by Andre Ward, the unbeaten U.S. Olympic champion who beat both men during the Super Six tournament a few years ago. Ward attended Saturdays fight as a commentator for American television and said he would be open to a rematch with Froch. "I actually watched (video of) Andre Ward against Kessler, dare I say, yesterday and today," Froch said. "Stepping in and closing the range once he threw the jab. ...
