SILVERSTONE, Great Britain -- Lewis Hamilton had to rely on a last-gasp lap to claim pole position for the British Grand Prix, beating Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by three tenths of a second.Hamilton had just one lap to claim pole after his initial attempt was deleted for exceeding track limits, but he coped with the added pressure to deliver a lap time of 1:29.287 in front of his home crowd. The lap was marginally slower than his best lap in Q2 of 1:29.243 -- a new qualifying record on the current Silverstone layout -- but with Rosbergs best effort a 1:29.606, it was still enough to secure pole position.Max Verstappen will start third on the grid after setting a 1:30.313 -- over a second off Hamiltons best but enough to beat his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo to the top three. Kimi Raikkonen was fifth fastest in the Ferrari and 0.2s quicker than teammate Sebastian Vettel, who went over 0.7s slower than his best Q2 attempt. Vettel will also drop five places to 11th once a penalty for a gearbox penalty is applied to the final grid.That will move Valtteri Bottas up to sixth ahead of Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso. Both Hulkenberg and Alonso had their best times deleted for exceeding track limits, with the McLaren driver dropping from eighth to tenth as a result.Sergio Perez missed out on a place in Q3 by 0.105s but will start 10th on the grid for Force India ahead Vettel when the grid penalty is applied. After showing promising pace in practice, Haas drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez managed 13th and 14th ahead of Daniil Kvat and Kevin Magnussen, who struggled to hook up a quick lap in Q2 on used soft tyres.Jenson Button was knocked out of Q1 after a rear wing issue limited him to just one lap in the session. Button was 0.5s off teammate Alonsos time in Q1, but the failure and the resulting fix saw him knocked out by Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat.
