SEATTLE - Felix Hernandez pitched with a comfortable lead, for a change. Only after Seattles ace got through a messy first two innings. Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer and a two-run double in his first two at-bats, and Hernandez helped the Mariners hand the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 7-4 victory Tuesday night. Seattle scored three times in the first inning and three times in the third to give Hernandez a rare cushion on a night when he wasnt at his best early. Thanks to the lead, Hernandez (7-4) was eventually able to find a groove and he ended up pitching into the eighth inning to win his second straight start. "I thought he had to work a little today. He made it difficult on himself working behind sometimes, he left a few pitches out early on, but did a nice job reeling it back in," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He did a real nice job of gathering himself and did a better job executing pitches. I think he was a little sloppy with his delivery early on but he tightened it up." It helped that Hernandez was given room for error thanks largely to Ibanez. Seattle came through with two outs twice in the first inning. Kendrys Morales had an RBI single to score Endy Chavez, and that was immediately followed by Ibanezs homer on the first pitch from Chicago starter Jake Peavy. It was Ibanezs 11th homer and second in two games. Two innings later, Ibanez doubled into the right-field corner to score Jason Bay and Morales for his second game this season with at least four RBIs. "I just figured, try to be aggressive early and get a good pitch to hit and it worked out," Ibanez said. The anticipated matchup between former Cy Young Award winners Hernandez and Peavy (6-4) never materialized into a pitching showdown. Hernandez gave up runs in each of the first two innings, while Peavy was knocked around for six earned runs and seven hits in just 2 1-3 innings before leaving with an injury to his ribs. Hernandez settled down quickly after giving up a run in the first and Adam Dunns long homer to centre field in the second. After Dunns 13th homer of the season and a single by Alexei Ramirez, Hernandez retired 16 of the next 17 batters and faced the minimum over the next five innings. His only mistake was a walk to Jordan Danks in the fifth, but he was quickly erased on a double play. Ramirez led off the eighth with a single, the first Chicago hit since the second inning, and Tyler Flowers chased Hernandez with an RBI double. Oliver Perez gave up an RBI single but got out of the eighth, and Tom Wilhelmsen worked the ninth for his 14th save in 17 chances. Hernandez went 7 1-3 innings, allowing four runs while striking out eight and walking one. "I had a pretty good fastball today and I realized they were just sitting on breaking balls with two strikes so I just tried using my fastball," Hernandez said. "They were just waiting for the changeup and I recognized it and I was able to throw my fastball for strikes." Seattle might have more roster shuffling ahead. Mariners catcher Jesus Sucre left in the fifth inning after taking a foul ball off the back of his left hand, and X-rays at the stadium may have shown a possible small fracture. Sucre was set for more exams Wednesday morning and the team may need to make a roster move. Seattle has only two healthy catchers at Triple-A, including prized prospect Mike Zunino. "Were kind of in a pickle here but were going to have to try and cover ourselves," Wedge said. Peavy left the game after Ibanezs double. X-rays were negative, but he had an MRI scheduled for Wednesday morning. He was tagged for six earned runs for the second straight start after lasting just four innings against the Chicago Cubs in his previous outing. Peavy said he doesnt think hell be able to make his next start. "You can just tell by the way he was throwing that something didnt look right, so we went out and checked and he wasnt able to get any velocity on it," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "It was one of those, you dont want him to go out there and continue and hurt something." NOTES: Seattles Nick Franklin had a home run in the third inning overturned after replays showed it hit the top of the wall and bounced back. It was the third time a home run call has been reversed at Safeco Field. ... Sucres replacement, Kelly Shoppach, had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to score Michael Saunders. ... Chicago lost its ninth straight road game. Cheap Vans Shoes Wholesale . P.A. Parenteau scored early in the third period to help the Avs edge Toronto 2-1 on Tuesday night. ELMONT, N.Y. -- For most of the year, trainer Chad Brown has been too busy moving forward to take time to look back. But as interest increased in Lady Elis remarkable return to Grade 1 form after her battle with life-threatening laminitis, Brown has begun thinking about where his filly is and where shes been.At this time last year, Lady Eli was on a farm in Kentucky getting some paddock time while on the upswing from laminitis. The illness arose after she stepped on a nail while walking back to her barn following a victory in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks on July 4, 2015.On Saturday, she will be one of the favorites to win the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf against some of the best turf runners in the world. Its been hard to stop and really comprehend how remarkable it is that shes come back from laminitis to this level -- which is extremely rare -- because we just keep moving forward with her, Brown said Sunday at Belmont Park. I have thought a lot about it this week. It was just a big deal to graduate her to standing in ice, and the first time we walked her down the shed row, that was amazing.Brown said he recently found a video of Lady Eli he took for her owners on the first day she went to the track at Palm Meadows last winter.I started looking through them this week as they asked me for information, Brown said, referring to NBC Sports, which is scheduled to air a feature on Lady Eli during its Breeders Cup broadcast. I finally did sit down and say, Wow, I just cant believe where shes at now and where she was. Shes just a remarkable horse.Lady Eli, who has won seven of eight career starts, reminded Brown just how good she is with a stellar five-furlong workout Sunday. Though the time of 1:03.17 wont wow anybody, the manner in which it was done was impressive. Irad Ortiz Jr., her regular jockey who has worked her the past several weeks, said Sundays move reminded him of Lady Eli pre-laminitis.For me, since shes come back, today is the day she looked the closest to what she was before, Ortiz said. Im very happy that she worked like thhat.ddddddddddddOrtiz said that in some of her previous workouts, when Lady Eli would approach the wire, she would be getting in, turning her head. Today, she was strong, and she just kept going after the wire and did everything right.Added Brown: As good as Ive seen her breeze maybe ever. She was very, very strong this morning and throughout her work and came back as though she hadnt even worked. Shes an amazing horse. That work was outstanding.Lady Eli was scheduled to have a walk day Monday and then ship to Southern California on Tuesday for the Breeders Cup. It was two years ago that Lady Eli first flashed her brilliance on the big stage, winning the Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. It will be the biggest race of her career, Brown said. Im excited for our team, the owners, and Im really excited for her that shes going to have her moment and go back to Santa Anita because she earned it.Lady Eli may also have earned another year in training. Though she is cataloged for the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, co-owner Sol Kumin said Monday that if healthy, theres a good chance Lady Eli will be withdrawn and would race next year. Kumin said he, co-owner Jay Hanley and Brown will discuss it.If shes healthy, my guess is shell run again next year, Kumin said.Lady Eli may also have earned another year in training. She worked in company with Lady Eli as the two were together throughout the move. She got a lot out of that race, and she should move forward, Brown said. ' ' '
