And he nearly led the Black Knights to victory against a heavily favored Navy team led by record-setting senior quarterback Keenan Reynolds.For a kid to not play in this offense in high school, learn the offense and the very next year hes starting in the Army-Navy game, thats a lot to ask, Army offensive coordinator Brent Davis said. It was a huge test. He really elevated his game. I think theres something there.Carter returns this season along with junior Ahmad Bradshaw, the starter in 2015 before injuries sent him to the sidelines.Its important that we start to show some improvement, Davis said. Bradshaw, a junior, sparkled at times (468 yards rushing with five touchdowns) when he wasnt ailing -- he missed four games -- and Carter has two big games (Rutgers was the other) under his belt.Its not a finished deal, Davis said. We think its a good situation to have two guys we feel good about.WHAT PRESSURE?Armys run totals were down in 2015. The Black Knights outgained opponents 2,931-1,982, but their per-game average was just 244.3 and their 4.8-yard average per run was barely better than their opponents (4.5). Thats a far cry from the 2012 team, which averaged 369.8 yards to lead the nation.A lot is expected this season.We need a guy to rush for 1,000 yards out of that position, Davis said. Not picking Steph Curry or even Karl-Anthony Towns could come back to haunt me, but Im willing to take that chance on this fantasy stud regardless of the change in scenery.Wittyngham on Towns: I was actually surprised to see KAT drop down to No. 5 for me. In his rookie season, he averaged a double-double, just under two blocks a game, over 80 percent from the line and over 50 percent from the field. Towns also averaged above two turnovers a game, which is not great but not awful. Towns is expected to do similar things this year and in a H2H, where things like percentages matter a little more, he contributes to five different categories on a weekly basis.Cregan on Paul: I was trying to employ this mock as a teachable moment. Meaning I wanted to highlight some players I think are going way too low. And in a turnover league, I think its hard to underestimate the specter of a reasonably ambulatory Chris Paul.In 2015-16, Paul placed second in the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.80, right behind the almost equally criminally underrated Mike Conleys 4.07). There simply isnt another PG in fantasyland who will reap as many floor-generalship-related rewards as Paul. I used to try to consign Paul to the dustbin of the traditional thinking that elite PGs begin to crater at age 29. Im starting to think of him more in a Tim Duncan light ... meaning when he starts to decline, Ill let you know. In a nonturnover league, Pauls value sinks. But here, he should have been a top-five pick.Engelmann on James: Yes, LeBron James is likely to coast through the regular season. Yes, its his 14th year in the league. Plus, the absence of [Matthew] Dellavedova, who was more a passer than Irving, probably doesnt help. Still, with LeBron, you know what you get, compared to certain young players that will have to improve to fulfill peoples expectations. Cregan on Whiteside: In a turnover scenario, bigs like [Hassan] Whiteside gain about 15 percent in value ... actually, every big save for DeMarcus Cousins, who gives it away with the rapidity of Emmanuel Mudiay. Whiteside will lock down two categories (blocks and field goal percentage) without hurting you in free throw percentage. In a post-Wade, post-Bosh lineup, Whiteside is going to get all the touches he can handle. Draft with impunity!Wittyngham on Wall: [John] Wall had career numbers in 2015-16, scoring 19.9 a game, providing 10.2 assists and almost 5 rebounds a game, all of which were career highs. He also nearly averaged two steals a game. Wall has gone up in value each season as hes improved significantly since his rookie season. Most importantly, he had a usage percentage of 28.4 percent, his second-highest in a single season (2012-13, 28.9). Hes getting the ball more and doing more with it.Tedesco on Griffin/Irving: What are the odds one of these dudes (or Harden!) wins the MVP? Long, sure, but you can talk yourself into it. [Kyrie] Irving could carry a great Cavs team while LeBron (rightfully) chills out. Griffin really should not still be available this late. Hes Blake Griffin! Also, did you hear he added a 3-point shot? (No, really, this is the year...)Wittyngham on [Isaiah] Thomas: I got him in all three mock drafts. So needless to say, check out the first mock-draft analysis and the second mock-draft analysis.Soppe on Lowry: With an elite first name and a much improved game, [Kyle] Lowry proved to be nothing short of an elite option last season, and there is nothing to suggest that 2016 will be any different. The scoring, assisting, rebounding and steal numbers have been a staple of his game over his last three seasons in Toronto, giving him a higher floor than any other third-round pick on the board (he should go in the second!). Thats a nice and reliable skill set on its own, but when you consider that he shot a career-high 491 3-pointers (106 more than his previous high) and converted a career-best 38.8 percent of them, Lowry is an elite point guard in sheeps clothes. Or Raptors clothes. Or something like that ... you get the picture. If you pass on a first-round PG, Lowry should be your next target.Cregan on Favors: I reached on [Derrick] Favors here because I was beginning to feel bad for everyone else after killing it the first three rounds. At this point (his sixth season at age 25), I think Favors is butting against his ceiling (17-20 points per game, 8-10 rebounds, 1.5-2.0 blocks, 1.0-1.5 steals). Hes a solid fifth-rounder, but this was 10 picks too early.Carpenter on Drummond: Ive been saying for years that I cant understand why players like [Andre]?Drummond find it more embarrassing to shoot underhanded free throws, because its been dubbed granny style, than to get benched in the fourth quarter of a close game because they shoot 35.5 percent free throws. He surely couldnt shoot any worse that way. But so long as he is a nightmare at the line, I wont touch him in roto leagues, because he will make it nearly impossible to compete in free throws. However, in a points league like this one, individual categories dont matter, and efficiency, while a bonus, is trumped by volume. Drummonds scoring, boards, blocks, steals and field goal percentage make him a beast in this format and a terrific value in the fourth round. And who knows, maybe Chinanu Onuaku will inspire Drummond to rethink his approach.Merritt on Jordan: Im OK overlooking the obvious free throw woes in exchange for Jordans monster rebounding and field goal percentage. As long as Chris Paul stays healthy and keeps feeding [DeAndre Jordan] lobs, this pick should provide some great value.Tedesco on Jokic: Nikolaaaaaa. The real plus-minus superstar should be ready to turn all that ridiculous efficiency into serious box-score stats. The Nuggets frontcourt might be crowded, but Jokic is the cornerstone in Denver.Merritt on DeRozan: [DeMar] DeRozan scores enough to make up for lacking in other areas, like a nonexistent long-range game. Other than Durant, hes the only player on my roster thats ccapable of dropping 25 points any given night, and thats worrisome.ddddddddddddWittyngham on Wiggins: I think this is a very limited pick, if he continues to do what hes done since entering the league. [Andrew] Wiggins has only really provided points and sometimes field goal percentage. This season, I think hell add another aspect to his game, whether its rebounding, steals or even 3-pointers. Think Wiggins will provide more. Plus, needed a shooting guard. He fills that and even small forward.Cregan on Fournier: I cant think of many 2 guards that have occupied my thoughts more than [Evan] Fournier. Because hes in a situation where he could break out into 20 points, 2.5 3-pointers-made territory. Shooting guard is dangerously thin, so Im putting Fourniers floor around round five.Kaiser on Booker: One of the knocks on [Devin] Booker in category leagues is that he doesnt do much other than score and shoot the 3. That makes him better for points leagues, and I was thrilled to get the Suns young scorer this late in the draft. He doesnt turn 20 until Oct. 30, but has already been named the starting shooting guard ahead of Brandon Knight, which says a lot about what Suns coach Earl Watson thinks of his game.Cregan on [Trevor] Ariza: Hes always among the most underrated players in fantasy. Mike DAntoni is in town. James Harden is playing point guard. Boost your projections accordingly.Merritt on Teague: Theres good value here in [Jeff] Teague, who will playing for a new contract in 2016-17, after some of the star point guards fell off the board. Im more comfortable with him than I am with DAngelo Russell or Rajon Rondo, both of whom were taken above Teague in this draft.Soppe on Turner: Upside, upside, upside. [Myles] Turner wont legally be able to consume an adult beverage until March, but he was impressive in a limited role last season (averaged 16.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per 36 minutes) and is a great upside pick as his usage figures to spike. He figures to grow into his 6-11 frame, and with 60 professional games under his belt, I like his chances to produce a double-double or two every single week. Combine that with nice touch that extends out to 20 feet, and youve got yourself a player ready to burst onto the fantasy scene. Take him at this price ... its the cheapest youre going to get him for quite some time.Cregan on Valanciunas: Dont let his shaky Olympic performance throw you off. After four seasons of steady upward statistical progress, [Jonas] Valanciunas is set up for a leap year in 2016-17. In line for more minutes in Torontos Biyombo-free frontcourt, Valanciunas should finally approach the 30 minutes per game barrier. Minutes, injuries and a lack of consistency have combined to set Valanciunas value in the late middle rounds. Im betting this is the season he returns fifth-round value.Engelmann on Noel: [Nerlens] Noel is somewhat high-risk because hes dealing with a groin strain, but essentially everyone he is competing with for playing time has or had an injury with a more problematic long-term outlook. Simmons has a foot injury, Okafor is taking a significant amount of time to get back from knee surgery, and although [Joel] Embiid looks good now, I expect him to at least get some off days.Kaiser on Kanter: [Enes] Kanter is a double-double guy who doesnt block a lot of shots or get many steals, and thats exactly what youre looking for in points leagues. Since I didnt draft a center in the early rounds, I was thrilled to get a scorer and rebounder of Kanters magnitude way down at pick No. 70. Without Kevin Durant on the roster in Oklahoma City, Kanter and the other scorers are going to play a bigger role than they have in previous years.Engelmann on Collison: Darren Collison will not play the first eight games because of suspension, but I expect him to perform well beyond that, as he appears to be healthy. Ty Lawson, his originally penciled-in backup, is currently having trouble catching team flights, etc., so I expect Collison to register lots of minutes.Soppe on Parsons: The Grizzlies spent far too much money on [Chandler] Parsons and Mike Conley this offseason, but as long as I am not on the hook for paying that contract, I have no issue on stacking them in fantasy this season. Conley is an efficient point guard who should see his usage increase a bit this season, while Parsons is a knock-down shooter who stands 6-foot-10 and should be counted on plenty in 2016. Im not going to say he is LeBron James lite, but Parsons does bring a well-rounded skill set to the table that you wont be able to find from elite shooters after the first few rounds. Memphis hasnt exactly been a fantasy factory in the past, but the return of Marc Gasol and the addition of Parsons figures to make this team more viable for our purposes than years past.Tedesco on [Aaron] Gordon: Is this Frank Vogel quote tantalizing or terrifying?Merritt on Redick: Im hoping the underrated [JJ] Redick can help make up some ground in 3-point shooting -- he, Durant and Korver below are my only long-range threats on this roster.Carpenter on [Brandon] Knight: He is frail and slated to come off the bench, behind Eric Bledsoe and Devin Booker, so fantasy folks are eschewing the veteran swing man this fall. At a certain point, though, he becomes a quality value pick. In fact, the lighter workload and competition he will have working with the second unit should help keep him healthy, productive and raise his field goal percentage to a respectable level. There is also the possibility of a trade to a starting gig as the season rolls along. Consider him in the early part of the later rounds.Engelmann on Matthews: Achilles tendon ruptures take some time to get back from. [Wesley] Matthews now has had another offseason to get back to form, so I expect his 3-point field goal percentage to get back to his usual 39 percent, on about seven attempts per game. And with Nowitzkis usage likely decreasing, the Mavs will look to other players to take more shots.Carpenter on Frazier: I havent been shy about drafting Jrue Holiday in the latter rounds of drafts, because he isnt injured. So once he feels comfortable enough with the health of his wife and decides to rejoin the Pelicans, he should hit the court running at full speed. Because we have no idea when that will be, I have paired him with Tim Frazier, who should start in Holidays stead. In fact, Frazier is good enough that he is worth a flier in any league, even if you dont take Holiday. Remember that in 16 games, played as a reserve with the Pelicans last season, he averaged 13.1 points per game, 7.5 assists per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, 1.4 steals per game and 0.8 3-point attempts per game. Granted, he is an undrafted 25-year-old with just 62 games under his belt, but he has a terrific opportunity to easily outpace a late-round draft spot.Kaiser on Evans: Throw out the fact that hes expected to miss the first month of the season to recover from a third knee surgery in nine months, [Tyreke] Evans is a steal when you can get him where I did -- the last pick of the draft. His poor shooting percentages dont matter in points leagues, making him more valuable, and as a scorer who also distributes and rebounds Evans is a welcome addition as long as he can stay healthy. But again, getting him where I did makes the risk worth it. ' ' '
