With Week 15 in the books, TSNs Chris Schultz offers his thoughts on the Bills defence, Johnny Manziel, the Seahawks and more. 1. For the 2nd week in a row, the best collective performance of the entire week was the Buffalo Bills defence. Against the Denver Broncos, they gave up just 173 passing yards and this week against Green Bay, it was only 185 yards allowed. Thats Manning and Rodgers with Carr and Brady to go with the final two games being at 0akland and at New England. In Arizona, you have Todd Bowles as a very successful defensive coordinator. In St Louis, you have Gregg Williams very much the same. But the best hire Doug Marrone made was Jim Schwartz after his time was over with the Detroit Lions. It will create exceptional optimism in the off-season for the Bills because if they ever create an offence like their defence, only the Bills will be a legitimate threat to the Patriots in the AFC East. And no one that follows the Bills is unaware of the reality they are progressing and improving without one of the best young linebackers in the entire league, Kiko Alonso. Did the Bills benefit from seven, that is seven, dropped passes from Aaron Rodgers receivers? They sure did. Yet the Packers did benefit from Jordy Nelson breaking up a sure touchdown return on an interception in a big way, too. Two of the best offences in football back-to-back and the Bills played extremely well on defence. What it does do in one of those negative, yet perhaps positive, ways is put even more pressure on EJ Manuel to max out his potential in 2015. I dont know if Kyle Orton can lead a team to a Super Bowl victory but I wonder if Manuel has a chance if he reaches his maximum in ability. When you are drafted in the first round, it first says you have the body to do it, to be really, really good. Do you have the mind, the confidence, the work ethic and the toughness in so many different forms? Those are the unanswered questions that all Bills fans will know a year from now. How good is the Bills defence? Well, the bottom line evaluation is points allowed. Detroit is the best, allowing a league-low 238. Next are Seattle and Arizona with 242 and 244, respectively. And then Kansas City and Buffalo are tied, allowing 254 each. If the Bills have a 10-win season, and that very well could happen, this season is a success no matter if the make the playoffs or not. 2. Johnny Manziel. Well, he had a tough day. One of the issues that stood in the way of his success was he played a very focused Bengals team that wanted to win the division, was aware of the Browns dominance back in Week 10 and yes, looked at Manziel as a spoiled brat not deserving of respect. Six times in the game, Bengals defensive players used the Manziel money sign as their sign of football dominance. The pressure Manziel must have been feeling had to be intense and in the best case scenario, the Browns open on offence and have success and therefore confidence. But the exact opposite happened. Cincinnati ran 22 plays and scored on their opening possession and all of a sudden, youre calling plays from a points deficit in the first quarter. Manziel ran six plays which were two 3-and-outs. It will be interesting to see how Mike Pettine handles the last two games at the Jets and at Pittsburgh. They do know and have a lot of film on Brian Hoyer, not much at all on Manziel. I say start Johnny and see what you got. 3. How good are the Seattle Seahawks? The last eight opponents they have played lost the next week after playing them. That is when you know you have a great team that it takes something out of you seven days later. I know Arizona is good, real good, a playoff team, but they are on their third quarterback with Ryan Lindley and now he has to run at least 60 plays against the fastest defence in football. I doubt they will ask Logan Thomas, a fourth round draft choice, to take over. Confidence is everything and you put a young player in there, you can damage it forever. Having said that, Lindey is only in his second year. If Arizona beats Seattle, then Bruce Arians is easily the coach of the year. 4. In the NFC South, the division winner will have an 8-8 record at best. The last time a team won a division with a losing record was the Seahawks at 7-9 back in 2010. There will be a lot of discussion about changing the playoff format in that a losing division winner should not be in the playoffs compared to a team with a winning record. Not sure. Still like the intensity of the battle to win the division and what it takes. New Orleans, Atlanta and Carolina would be looking at next year and not this year if the divisions had no value and the NFC South would have no discussion. Keep it the way it is. 5. You go to three NFC Championships and one Super Bowl appearance in three years and your time is up. It happened to Andy Reid, it happened to Jeff Fisher and it pretty much happens to everyone at some point in a career. It is just time and the reasons are not always known or obvious. The value of Jim Harbaugh will be immense and genuine. He will have the pick of top assistants and a history of experience on a personal level and will take his dismissal personally if it happens. He is under contract so he could be traded as a commodity, but what if he is traded to a place he does not want to go? That opens up a lot of other questions. In watching the 49ers and Seahawks, I dont think the players are not playing hard; they did. They miss Navorro Bowman and Patrick Willis more than anticipated. Marcus Marriota won the Heisman but Harbaugh has more value to the next team. 6. Best game of Week #16 should be Indianapolis at Dallas. The Colts have won the AFC South but Dallas has to keep winning to win the NFC East. An interesting experiment here to be answered: is it the running back or the offensive line? If DeMarco Murray cant play, it will be Joseph Randel and Lance Dunbar at running back; both good but not great as it compares to Murray. If either of those running backs truly excel, then put another compliment on the extended list for the Dallas Cowboys offensive line. The Colts are a tough team to beat and if Dallas does lose and Philadelphia wins over Washington on Saturday, then Philadelphia is tied with Dallas and the Eagles own the first tie breaker in division wins. 7. I am more convinced than ever it is not so much what your opponent does as much as it is what you do or dont. Both teams were 5-8 and in the first quarter, you see why. They cant control their own actions and reactions. When you watch Jay Cutler and Drew Brees in the same game, you dont notice the difference in skill as much as confidence in body language. Brees takes control of time and energy. Whether it is good or bad, he keeps pushing forward and dismisses the negative; everything is moving forward. With Cutler not as much. He reacts to the energy while Brees creates and dictates to the energy. Leadership is a lot of things but a key one is demeanor. Body language. The way you look and act that others see. Its a major strength for Brees, not so much for Cutler. The Saints are now 6-8 and no one will want to go to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for a playoff game. Toronto (11-12) gave up leads in 10-8 and 11-4 losses to the Baltimore Orioles this week. It was never close Friday as the Boston Red Sox got to Mark Buehrle early en route to an 8-1 win. Juan Bernat Jersey . This is the final meeting of the season between these teams.? The Capitals were 5-4 winners in a shootout Oct.PHILADELPHIA - After struggling through another start, Phillies right-hander A.J. Burnett said he might walk away from millions of dollars not to return in 2015. Hisashi Iwakuma struck out a season-high 11 batters in eight scoreless innings and Kyle Seager homered to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Burnett (6-14) lost his fifth straight decision and dropped to 0-6 with a 6.41 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break. He allowed six hits with four walks and hit two batters in 7 2-3 innings. Burnett signed a one-year deal with a player option for next year in the off-season. After Tuesdays outing, he sounded as if he might decline the option. He would stand to make $10 million next season after making his 27th start on Tuesday. Asked if he would return to the Phillies in 2015, Burnett said, "Probably not. Well see." Control has been a problem all season for Burnett, who began the day leading the majors with 72 walks. He started poorly, with eight straight balls to open the game. "It took a while to get loose, much more than normal," Burnett said. The Mariners took advantage as both of those batters, Austin Jackson and Dustin Ackley, scored on RBIs by Robinson Cano and Logan Morrison. "He struggled out of the gate with early walks," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He just couldnt find the strike zone. But then he settled down." His counterpart settled in right from the jump. Iwakuma (12-6) was masterful while allowing four hits and no walks. Since July 1, the right-hander is 7-2 with a 1.63 ERA, 65 strikeouts and four walks in 72 innings over 10 starts. "He was outstanding," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He commanded all of his pitches. He was in and out, up and down. Did a tremendous job for us." The Phillies, who have scored three runs or less 65 times this season, got just one batter to second base against Iwakuma. They have lost six of their last eight. The Mariners needed three pitchers in the ninth to preserve the victory. The last of the trio, Fernando Rodney, came on with two outs and the tying run at the platee and struck out Cody Asche to record his 36th save in 39 opportunities.dddddddddddd "We have a strong belief in our bullpen, so I was able to watch the TV very calmly," Iwakuma said through an interpreter. Asked if he was tempted to let Iwakuma come out for the ninth, McClendon said, "No, no." The Phillies avoided their 14th shutout when Chase Utley scored on Yoervis Medinas wild pitch. Domonic Brown followed with an RBI double to pull Philadelphia within 5-2 before Medina hit Carlos Ruiz to put runners on first and second for Asche. Mike Zunino was 0-for-17 before getting two hits and driving in two runs. The Mariners, who scored two runs in the first, have won 11 of their last 14. Seager began the sixth with a homer, his 19th, to deep right on a 3-0 pitch. Zunino hit a two-run single in the eighth to chase Burnett and put Seattle in front 5-0. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: RF Michael Saunders, who has been on the DL since July 11 with a strained left oblique, made his 10th rehab start Tuesday night for Triple-A Tacoma. Entering Tuesday, he was batting .258 at Tacoma. Phillies: OF John Mayberry Jr. played in his first rehab game with Triple-A Lehigh Valley at Pawtucket on Tuesday night. Mayberry has been on the DL since July 21 with left wrist inflammation. UP NEXT Mariners: LHP James Paxton (3-0, 2.20) makes his sixth start of the season when the teams wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. The 25-year-old is unbeaten in nine career starts, with his latest victory last Friday at Detroit when he allowed one run on five hits in six innings. Paxton will be facing the Phillies for the first time. Phillies: LHP Cole Hamels (6-6, 2.44) will look for some better luck. He has a 1.71 ERA in his last three starts but is 0-1 over that stretch due to a lack of run support that has plagued him all season. REVERE HITLESS Philadelphias Ben Revere went without a hit for just the second time in his last nine games, going 0-for-4 with a rare strikeout. Revere entered Tuesday second in the NL in batting at .313 and leading the league in hardest to fan (one strikeout per 11.9 plate appearances).
