One game into the season and plenty is unknown about Cal State Northridge and No. 16 UCLA, but one element of both teams is certain as they prepare to play Sunday night at 9 p.m. Eastern time at Pauley Pavilion. Both teams can light up the scoreboard with efficient scorers. UCLA and Northridge combined to score 215 points in their respective season-openers on Friday night. The Bruins defeated Pacific 119-80 behind a school-record 18 3-pointers and 29 assists. Northridge beat Pomona-Pitzer 96-72 with four players scoring at least 15 points, led by Washington transfer Darin Johnson, a junior guard who had 20 points and seven rebounds.UNLV transfer Kendall Smith, a junior guard in his second year at Northridge, contributed 17 points for coach Reggie Theus, a former Running Rebels star under Jerry Tarkanian who is engineering a run-and-gun offense in his fourth season. Its nice to be deep as we are because you can get different guys in the game, said Theus, whose roster includes eight transfers from other Division I institutions, including his son Reggie Theus Jr. from South Carolina.Nine Matadors made their debut for Northridge, including Theus son, Johnson, Connecticut transfer Rakim Lubim and Texas A&M transfer Dylan Johns.UCLA coach Steve Alford expressed concern over a quick turnaround from Fridays game preparing for an experienced Northridge team. Were playing a really good opponent that had a lot of transfers sitting out last year, Alford said. Its a seasoned team were playing Sunday. The Bruins do not have as much college experience as Northridge, but they have dynamic freshmen in guard Lonzo Ball and wing T.J. Leaf. Ball had a near-triple double against Pacific with 19 points, eight rebounds and a game-high 11 assists (with only one turnover) while Leaf contributed 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. They are unselfish guys, Alford said of his freshmen standouts. Im more impressed with them as young men than I am as basketball players, and I think they are very good players.UCLA senior guard Bryce Alford was one shy of his career record with 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range. Reserve point guard Aaron Holiday, who started all 32 games as a freshman last year, had 18 points with five assists and no turnovers. We just had a lot of really good things that took place, Alford said. We want to be a team that will stretch the floor because we have that ability. We have zero (personnel) issues. The culture has been terrific.Northridge has the confidence it can run with the Bruins after posting 20 fast-break points and 50 points in the paint against Pomona-Pitzer. The Matadors were not as potent from behind the 3-point line as UCLA, making 8 of 17, but Smith and Johnson were each 4 of 5 from that range. We are going to have to play a lot better basketball to beat UCLA, Theus said. We are going to watch a little bit of the film. Its a great challenge for us to go up to Pauley Pavilion. Im looking forward to that. Custom San Jose Sharks Jerseys .R. Smith realized how easily basketball can be taken from him, and he wasnt going to take his place in the NBA for granted anymore. Custom Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys . After Mondays hard-fought loss, the wait seemed longer than usual. Getting set to go their separate ways for a short Christmas break, the Raptors coach credited his team for their effort on a seemingly impossible three-game road trip, urging them to build on that success when they get back to work at the end of the week. http://www.customjerseyshockey.com/ .Y. -- Jayna Hefford scored the winning goal Friday as Canada survived a scare with a 4-3 win over Sweden at the Four Nations womens hockey tournament. Custom Detroit Red Wings Jerseys .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. Custom Los Angeles Kings Jerseys . LOUIS -- Rookie Tavon Austin has missed another day of practice, lessening the odds hell be ready for the St.PHOENIX -- Jason Kubels legs are feeling better and the Arizona Diamondbacks are reaping the benefits. Kubel hit a two-run single in the ninth inning to rally the Diamondbacks past Aroldis Chapman and the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 Saturday night for their fourth straight victory. "Its just being comfortable," said Kubel, who missed two weeks this season with a strained left quadriceps. "Im not searching or cheating on pitches. I finally feel like I have two legs under me and Im using them now." Kubels big hit came shortly after Jay Bruces second home run of the game gave the Reds a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth. Paul Goldschmidt lined a leadoff single in the bottom half that deflected off the glove of first baseman Joey Votto and into right field. Chapman (3-3) then issued consecutive walks to Miguel Montero and Cody Ross. With the infield drawn in, Kubel singled over second base for his third career game-ending hit and first since May 22, 2010. "You hate to lose it like that," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Of late, weve lost quite a few of them like that. It seemed like Chapman was overthrowing some today." Brad Ziegler (4-1) replaced Heath Bell after Bruces second home run and earned the win. Gerardo Parra hit a two-run homer for Arizona. Bell, who had converted nine straight saves, came on in the ninth to protect a 2-1 lead. But he walked Brandon Phillips leading off the inning and Bruce followed with his team-leading 18th homer. Bell, who has served as the Diamondbacks closer since J.J. Putz went on the disabled list May 8 with a strained right elbow, has allowed a home run in each of his last five appearances. Putz could return as early as this week. "We might have to put some thought into that," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "Hes done a pretty good job for us also. Today wasnt his day and I got him out of there pretty quick. I recognized it." Starting pitchers Mike Leake and Patrick Corbin dueled for eight innings before turning the game over to the bullpens. Leake retired the first 17 batters he faced and scattered four hits over eight innings with a walk and a strikeout for the Reds, who have lost three straight. "Its a tough one to swallow but we will be right back there tomorrow," Leake said. Corbin allowed one run and three hits over eight innings andd was handed his fourth straight no-decision in his quest to become the first Diamondbacks pitcher to win his first 10 decisions.dddddddddddd. "Obviously, Id love to get that 10th one and get it out of the way," Corbin said. "Fortunately, we came back and won the game." Bruce gave the Reds a 1-0 lead when he led off the second inning with a line drive to the balcony overhanging centre field, about 20 feet from where his ninth-inning shot landed. The 472-foot drive was the longest home run at Chase Field this season and the fourth-longest ever by an opponent. Bruce has homered in seven of his last nine games. "The big night offensively didnt really mean a whole lot," Bruce said. Corbin broke up Leakes nascent bid for a perfect game when he looped an opposite-field double into the left-field corner with two outs in the sixth. "It was a terrible swing," Corbin said. Two pitches later, Parra drove a cut fastball just over the fence into the pool area in right-centre for his second home run in two games to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. Corbin allowed Bruces first home run, a single by Devin Mesoraco in the seventh and Derrick Robinsons one-out triple to centre in the eighth. With Robinson representing the potential tying run, the 23-year-old lefty struck out Shin-Soo Choo and Votto to escape the jam and turn the game over to the bullpen. "I was coming inside early and he worked the count full like he always does," Corbin said. "Hes a tough batter to face. If hes going to beat me, I was going to throw it as hard as I could by him and if he got me, he got me." NOTES: Chapmans blown save was his first since May 19 at Philadelphia. ...
