GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Desperate to improve Floridas free-throw shooting last season, coach Mike White tried a little bit of everything. He tweaked some of his players mechanics. He increased repetitions in practice. He had guys shoot while tired, winded and with some team accountability at stake. He even considered bringing in a sports psychologist.I didnt want it to become more mental than it already was, White said Tuesday. So he waited until the offseason.Thats when White brought in renowned sports psychologist Spencer Wood to work with the Gators this summer. If you can train your mind, use different methods to understand how to stay in that place -- whatever that place is for you or whatever that trigger word is for you -- or get you back into that place of calm, or confident, those type things, I think it can help you with the rest of your game as well, said White, whos in his second season in Gainesville. So far, its made a noticeable difference for Florida (2-0), which plays St. Bonaventure (1-0) in Lakeland on Thursday night. After ranking 323rd (out of 346 NCAA teams) from the foul line last season, shooting a meager 64.7 percent, Florida is up to 78.6 percent from there this season. Two games are hardly enough of a sample size to make White a believer, but he wants to think there is improvement. You hope that moving forward we can be in the same mindset, White said. Im not sure its fixed. I dont want to sit here and think were a great free-throwing shooting team. But what weve seen the first two games is what weve been in practice. You want that to continue, of course. Our guys are in a pretty good place.White said feedback was positive, especially from center John Egbunu, point guard Kasey Hill and forward Justin Leon. Egbunu (53.2 percent), Hill (53.8) and Leon (46.2) were among Floridas worst foul shooters last season. All three are above 70 percent through two games.Leon said Wood worked with players to find their hype meter on a scale of 1 to 10, telling them they needed to play defense at a more frantic pace than offense, especially at the line.He gave me a lot of different breathing patterns, Leon added. So thats really been working for me. ... Its good to see it impact the game. That means the stuff weve been doing is working and it shows weve taken to the time to put the effort in the gym.Woods resume includes a number of college and professional teams. He even worked with the Gators previously, getting invited by former Florida coach Billy Donovan before the 2010 season and helping that team deal with the psychological aspects of trying to get back to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year absence. The Gators, led by Chandler Parsons, Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker, returned to the tournament.White blamed free-throw shooting for his team missing the NCAA Tournament last season. The Gators blew several leads, failing to put teams away late from the line, and had double-digit misses in 10 games. The Gators look considerably more confident this season. If not for newcomer Canyon Barry missing three of his first four underhanded free throws in the opener because of nerves, the Gators would have shot at least 80 percent from the charity stripe in both games.Very nice, very nice, White said. Knock on wood we continue shooting it this way. We have in practice. We just hope we continue to see that carry over. You can see it their body languages, a little more confident at the foul line. ... Its a big factor for us. It kept up out of the NCAA Tournament last year, single-handily, and hopefully this year we continue shooting like this.---More AP college basketball: http://collegebasketball.ap.org Custom George Brett Jersey . Defencemen Drew Doughty, Shea Weber and forward Ryan Getzlaf also scored for the Canadians, who started their gold-medal defence 2-0. Goalie Roberto Luongo, getting the call in place of Game 1 starter Carey Price, was solid when needed in making 23 saves for the shutout. Andrew Luck lost his favourite target and the Indianapolis locker room lost one of its most revered leaders when Reggie Wayne was diagnosed Monday with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that will cost him the rest of the season. MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Most questions lobbed at Kansas State coach Bill Snyder during his weekly media availability had to do with his offense, running the gamut from poor play calling to lack of execution. In short, nothing that concerns Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury right now.The Red Raiders (3-1, 1-0) are back to their high-flying ways this year, leading the Big 12 in just about every offensive category. Theyre averaging 660 yards and nearly 60 points through their first four games, and are coming off a 55-19 drubbing of Kansas that could have been much worse.Red Raiders quarterback Pat Mahomes is throwing for 442 yards a game, roughly 100 yards more than the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) are averaging -- as an entire offense.Their quarterback is awfully good, Snyder said, finally fielding a question about something other than his own offense. They like taking their throws downfield. They have some pretty good wide receivers that run well and have some height to them. I think the thing that they have made a living on is being able to get the ball out of his hands real quick.Of course, that assumes Mahomes will play on Saturday. The FBS total offense leader is day-day-day after hurting his throwing shoulder against the Jayhawks. If he isnt ready, junior Nic Shimonek would get his first career start.Nic jumps out to me just being ready, Kingsbury said, being prepared.Whoever is at quarterback will face a stern test in the Wildcats, who have somewhat atoned for their sketchy offense by leading the league in most defensive categories.Theyre a good defense. There is no question, Kingsbury said. They make you earn every inch of it. They play around the football. Theyre sound in their assignments and their techniques and they play really hard. And yards we get, well earn them.Likewise, the Wildcats will have to earn every yard they get .So far, that hasnt been nearly enough.I have confidence seeing as we have one of the top defenses in the country, Kansas State running back Alex Barnes said, but we do have pressure to score more points than when we did last week in order to win games in the Big 12.As the Wilddcats and Red Raiders prepare to meet, here are some of the main story lines:TECH PLAYS D, TOO: After a couple lousy outings, the Red Raiders held Kansas to 296 yards total offense in last weeks win.dddddddddddd They also forced a pair of turnovers. We havent played our best football yet, Texas Tech defensive back Justis Nelson said. Last week was a piece to that puzzle. Every week were trying to get better.ABOUT THAT PLAY CALLING: Kansas States offensive troubles last week at West Virginia were in part due to play calls, in part due to getting the calls to the quarterback. Snyder said the process was too slow, and that prevented the Wildcats from getting into rhythm.I thought going in to the ballgame that we had solved most of the problems, Snyder said, but obviously I took something for granted, which is my mistake.AND THAT EXECUTION: Jesse Ertz was 10 of 30 for 166 yards with an interception against the Mountaineers , while the Wildcats were held to 2.9 yards per carry on the ground. Those numbers wont cut it even if Kansas State manages to slow down the Red Raiders. It all starts with me having to make better decisions about some things, Snyder said.NIC WHO: If he must start, Shimonek proved last week the Red Raiders are in capable hands. The former Texas prep standout and transfer from Iowa threw four touchdown passes against Kansas. We have a lot of faith in Nic, Texas Tech wide receiver Jonathan Giles said. Hes a hard worker. Hes a good kid on and off the field. I dont think it changes.RUN, RUN, RUN: The Wildcats will try to counter the Red Raiders air-it-out approach by pounding the ball on the ground. They struggled to do that against the Mountaineers, but they might fare better against an inconsistent Texas Tech defense.A lot of teams in the Big 12 have a fast-paced offense, Kansas State running back Charles Jones said. We have to control the ball, and when you run the ball, you can control the clock.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
