Defence has been the Winnipeg Goldeyes Achilles heel as of late. The Goldeyes committed three errors on Tuesday, leading to a trio of unearned runs in a 6-5 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries. Its the seventh consecutive game Winnipeg has committed at least one error. Jake Taylor gave Sioux Falls an early first inning lead with an RBI double that scored Nick Van Stratten, who had reached on an Amos Ramon error. The Canaries added one more run in the frame to take a 2-0 lead and in the very next inning, Taylor tacked on another with a two-out solo home run. The Goldeyes put a pair up in the third inning. Back-to-back RBI groundouts from Ryan Scoma and Josh Mazzola made it a one-run game, but Sioux Falls restored the three-run lead in the fourth off a pair of home runs from Jared Clark, his league leading 8th, and Tim Puhata. The sixth inning has been a big one for Winnipeg all season and it was once again on Tuesday. Scoma would score on a Mazzola double to begin the inning. Later, the Goldeyes were able to capitalize on a Canaries error, as Mazzola scored on a Taylor throw away. Nate Samson would then come up with a two out single to tie the game up at 5-5. Winnipegs defence would put the game back in Sioux Falls court in their half of the sixth. Ramons second error of the game allowed Clark to reach and he would score on a sacrifice fly to put the Canaries back on top by one. The Goldeyes had one last chance in the ninth against Canaries closer Alan DeRatt. The Goldeyes got a second life when the Canaries couldnt catch a Nick Liles infield popup for the games final out. However, Liles tried to advance to second on the play and was tagged out to end the game. “We just didnt play great defense,” said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea on the TSN 1290 post-game show. “We left a couple of pitches up and they hit them out of the park.” Kyle Vazquez worked two scoreless innings in relief to improve to 2-2. He struck out two and allowed one hit. DeRatt picked up his four save of the season. Pete Gehle took the loss for Winnipeg in his first start since May 25. Activated from the disabled list before the game, Gehle went 5.1 innings giving up three earned runs on nine hits. He allowed all three of the Canaries home runs. The Goldeyes drop to 9-3 on the road so far this season. “He had a good two-seamer going, but he was struggling to locate it,” said Vermilyea. “He battled out there without his best stuff.” The two teams meet again tomorrow night for their third of four games this week.
