CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers are taking a chance on Andrew Bynum and his creaky knees. The free agent centre, who never played one second with Philadelphia last season because of knee injuries, has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Cavs, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Bynum accepted the deal on Wednesday night, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasnt announced the agreement. Earlier Wednesday, Bynum visited the Dallas Mavericks, and earlier this week met with the Atlanta Hawks. The 7-footer was traded to the 76ers last summer as part of a four-team blockbuster. Bynum, a former All-Star with the Lakers, was expected to help Philadelphia contend, but the 25-year-old never stepped on the court and underwent surgery on both knees in March. The Cavs are only guaranteeing $6 million and one year to Bynum, the person said. The team has a $12 million option on the second year, and the contract could reach $24 million if Bynum hits certain performance bonuses. Its a minimal-risk signing for the Cavs, who have concerns about Bynums knees and will have protection built into the deal. But owner Dan Gilberts willingness to take the gamble allowed the Cavs to get a player who could help them climb back among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. In Cleveland, Bynum will be reunited with Cavs coach Mike Brown. The two spent one season together in Los Angeles, and Bynum had his most productive year as a pro, averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds in 60 games while earning an All-Star spot. Bynum, if healthy, should move the Cavs from one of the Easts worst teams to a playoff contender. Cleveland won just 24 games last season and has won only 66 in the three years since LeBron James left. Bynum can change that. With two NBA titles, he has plenty of playoff experience and he will give the Cavs another proven star to go along with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving and a young, talented core. In guaranteeing Bynum only one year, the Cavs have an out if he doesnt perform up to expectations. But if he does play well, the Cavs will have a roster that could attract another high-profile free agent next summer, when James can opt out of his deal in Miami and hit the market. The landing of Bynum caps a successful off-season for the Cavs and especially general manager Chris Grant, who had more pressure placed on him when Gilbert vowed after winning the NBA draft lottery that the Cavs would get back to the playoff next season. After re-hiring Brown, who was fired three years ago, Grant selected UNLV forward Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 overall pick in last months draft. Cleveland then reached agreements with free agent forward Earl Clark and guard Jarrett Jack, two players who will fit nicely into the Cavs rotation. The Cavs will introduce Clark and Jack at a news conference on Friday, but Bynum is not expected to attend. Motivated and in shape, Bynum has the potential to get Cleveland back near the top more quickly. A force on the floor, the 280-pounder will give Brown a defensive presence to protect the rim and he can do enough on offence to keep teams honest inside. The Cavs sold Bynum on their future, and their association with the Cleveland Clinic and its doctors were a comfort to a player who has had knee problems for years. Bynum didnt work out for the Cavs, but the team was able to examine his knees and came away knowing there are risks but convinced he is worth their investment. Bynums agent, David Lee, has said his client will be ready when training camp begins. Bynums signing comes three summers after James decided to leave the Cavs after seven seasons to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. Cleveland has had trouble luring high-profile free agents in the past, but if the gamble with Bynum pays off, that might not be such a problem in the future.Jake McCabe Jersey .C. -- Chris Thorburn thinks one of the reasons the Winnipeg Jets have been successful under new coach Paul Maurice is that theyre playing together as a team. Jack Eichel Jersey . It was the second consecutive win for the Pacers (2-5), who lost their first five preseason games. Jeff Teague led the Hawks (1-5) with 17 points and eight assists and Al Horford had 12 points and seven rebounds. Hawkins, who turns 41 in December, will compete with Rex Brothers for the closers role at spring training. Rasmus Ristolainen Sabres Jersey . He just needed to be his best twisting, turning acrobatic self. "I didnt need to be anybody else, I just needed to be myself and be aggressive," said Burks, who scored a career-high 34 points to spark the Utah Jazz to a 118-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. Zemgus Girgensons Jersey . -- Playing time has been limited for Maxim Tissot this season, so the Montreal Impact defender made the most of his first scoring opportunity on Saturday.CLEVELAND -- Wearing the same style Chief Wahoo cap he had in his playing days, Eddie Robinson was hoping to see the Indians win another World Series title.Like any Cleveland fan, hes waited a long time. Its been so darn long, he said with more than a hint of Texas twang. The last living member from Clevelands 1948 World Series title team, Robinson attended Game 6 on Tuesday night as a guest of the Indians, who were trying to close out the Chicago Cubs at home and capture their first championship in 68 years. As he sat in a luxury suite before the first pitch, the 95-year-old Robinson -- who made the trip from Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Bette -- admitted some pregame nervousness for these Indians while he reminisced about his time in Cleveland.Robinson was the first baseman on a team that featured five Hall of Famers, including Bob Feller and Larry Doby. Robinson drove in the Series-clinching run in the eighth inning of Game 6 off the Boston Braves Warren Spahn, giving the Indians their most recent championship on Oct. 11, 1948.Robinson laughed while recalling that team didnt celebrate like they do today. After dressing and getting on the train, he and his teammates did have quite a ride back to Cleveland.Thats when the party started, said Robinson, who batted .300 in that Series. There was champagne dripping from the ceiling. And when we arrived here the next morning, they had a parade arranged, and from the train station we went to Euclid Avenue and every player got in a convertible and we went down Euclid and it was marvelous. It looked like everyone in Cleveland had turned out.Robinson said he keeps a close eye on the Indians from afar, but the one-time Texas general manager said the Rangers are closest to his heart. He thought theyd be representing the AL in the World Series this year but our pitching went a little sour.Robinson, who will be watching the game in the suite along with Indians manager Terry Franconas dad, Tito, said the 2016 Indians dont remind him of the 48 club, which had to win a one-game playoff over the Boston Red Sox just to make the Series.dddddddddddd Robinson caught the final out and still has the ball.No resemblance, he said. We had great pitching like this team, but this team is comprised of a bunch of players, theyre kind of no-name players. I went to see Cleveland play when they came to Texas this year and I told my wife, `They have a good team but Ive never heard of any of them except for (Mike) Napoli. He was with Texas and Ive been a Napoli fan for a long time. Good player. Good teammate.Still remarkably fit and cogent at his advanced age, Robinson said the key to his longevity has been a good wife. He said it will be difficult for him to see Game 6 from the suite, so he may come inside and watch it on TV.Robinson said he stayed mostly in touch 48 teammates Bob Lemon, Al Rosen and Dale Mitchell when their careers ended. He said they tried to stay close, but the years pulled them apart.Robinsons memory is amazingly strong. He was quick to point out that in 48, Lemon pitched 20 complete games. Can you believe that? he said. And if you needed a relief pitcher, they might have put Lemon in to relieve. Its so different now.Robinson loves the game now, especially the home runs. He just wishes the fences were as short in his day as they are now.Todays players have better perks than he and his teammates enjoyed, and the biggest perk is the money. Robinson was asked if he could imagine the kind contracts pitchers like Feller or Lemon could have fetched today.I think about Eddie Robinson, what he could have got, he said with a chuckle. ' ' '
