NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks have signed former NBA champion Lamar Odom, who was out of the league this season. The move gives new president Phil Jackson an off-season to look at the versatile forward who thrived in his system. Odom helped the Los Angeles Lakers win NBA titles in 2009 and 2010, and was the Sixth Man of the Year in 2011, Jacksons final season as coach. But Odom has never captured that success again. He last played in the NBA with the Clippers in 2012-13, averaging 4.0 points in about 20 minutes per game, and appeared in two games for a team in Spain this season. Minkah Fitzpatrick Jersey . UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Jaroslav Halak took his team record-tying 10th straight win in stride, just as he did the first nine. The New York Islanders goalie wasnt tested much by the Ottawa Senators, but his 16-save performance was enough for his latest victory — 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night.Halak, in his 10th NHL season and first with the Islanders, tied Hall of Famer Billy Smiths run of 10 consecutive wins in 1982.It wasnt an easy game, Halak said. It was a weird game for both sides. It seemed like there was a slow pace to it the whole night. Its a team effort. I think everybody deserves the credit.Halak has allowed only 13 goals during his streak, but was quick to say its not as simple as it appears. Its never easy, he told reporters around his locker. I will give you my gear and you can try it out there.Thomas Hickey made this win possible. He set up Ryan Stromes go-ahead goal in the third period and then won it by scoring his second of the season 3:06 into overtime.I came around the net and theres bodies going to the net, and I just threw it blind, to be honest, Hickey said. Maybe it got a bounce off something.Thats how a lot of goals are scored, just throwing it and getting lucky. A lucky bounce and a big point. The Islanders (18-7) are putting up impressive numbers across the board, including an 8-0 mark in games decided after regulation. They are one point behind Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay.Brock Nelson scored in the second period for the Islanders, who have won seven of eight and 12 of 14.Ottawa used a crisp play to tie it 2-all as Mark Stone, on the goal line to Halaks left, fed the puck in front to Clarke MacArthur for his ninth goal at 11:14.The Islanders took a 2-1 lead 1:07 into the third during 4-on-4 play. Hickey tried to jam the puck past Craig Anderson at the right post. It caromed across the crease to Strome, who stuffed it in on the left side for his fifth goal.Mike Hoffman scored in the first period, and Anderson made 25 saves for the Senators, who have lost five of six (1-4-1). These teams meet again in Ottawa on Thursday. Its good to get a point, but bittersweet to lose in overtime, MacArthur said. It was a carom off a skate for the winner, and thats just the way it happens when youre going well like they are.It took until late in the second for the Islanders to get going, and for a brief moment they thought they might have taken the lead.New York got even at 1 when Kyle Okposo forced a turnover and flung a backhand pass behind his back from the centre-ice boards that Nelson tracked down in the Senators end. He skated in alone on Anderson and beat him with 1:34 remaining for his 11th goal. Then, just as time was expiring in the period, Casey Cizikas fired a rising drive from above the left circle that hit the top corner of the net just as the green light behind it went on to signal time had run out. The officials went to video replay, and before they could announce no goal, the crowd groaned as it saw on the big board that the puck was shy of the line when the clock hit 0.0.Neither team could muster much offence in either of the first two periods. New York had a 15-11 shots edge through 40 minutes. The only two penalty calls in that span came 31 seconds apart in the final minute of the second. The Senators took a 1-0 lead in a lacklustre first period in which the teams combined for only 14 shots — five for Ottawa.Hoffman fired an unscreened shot from a few feet inside the blue line that beat Halak at 10:02. Hoffmans eighth goal came on the Senators third shot. They didnt have many shots but they still were able to get two goals, Halak said. I need to get at least one of those — especially the first one. It shouldnt go in.The guys did a great job coming back and scoring big goals.NOTES: Injured Senators RW Bobby Ryan missed his second game. ... The Islanders were again without Lubomir Visnovsky and fellow defenceman Johnny Boychuk. Visnovsky sat out his second straight game, and Boychuk was sidelined for his third. ... The standout quarterback sustained the LCL injury in a win over Baltimore in December, then tore the ACL in Washingtons loss to Seattle in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs. The former Heisman Trophy winner was cleared to play by renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews last week, and Shanahan confirmed the expected during his Monday press conference. "I feeel very good where Roberts at, and hell be our starter on Monday night unless theres some crazy setback that we dont anticipate," said Shanahan.dddddddddddd Shanahan also reiterated that Griffin, who also tore his ACL in the same knee during his sophomore season at Baylor in 2009, will not be under any restrictions. "If we didnt feel like Robert was full-go and he wasnt ready to play and do all the things that you ask a guy to do, then he would not be playing in this game," he stated. "We believe he can do everything that a quarterback is asked to do and if thats sprinting out, if its running the option, if its dropping back, we think he can do all those things because hes proved it to us in practice, and there hasnt been a setback so thats been a great sign." MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves sent Kevin Love off to NBA All-Star weekend with a complete performance and a critical win. The Denver Nuggets played as though they were already relaxing on a tropical beach. Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night. "Its always a tough game before the break to come out with a lot of energy, and we did," Love said. "We were excited to play. We knew we needed a win." Love, chosen as a first-time starter for the Western Conference team, will also take part in the 3-point shooting contest this weekend in New Orleans. In five February games, Love has averaged 32.6 points. He sat last week because of a stiff neck, and then with a bruised left quadriceps, but his banged-up body hasnt hindered his production when he is on the court. "I was pretty sore before the game still, but once we got going I felt good," Love said. "I was definitely happy we got the large lead, and I really, really needed to sit down those last eight minutes." Corey Brewer added 22 points, J.J. Barea pitched in 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting, and Ricky Rubio had 11 points, 12 assists and a season-high seven steals for the Wolves, who had coach Rick Adelman back on the sideline. He missed the previous game on Monday, an absence he said was related to his wifes health. The Wolves, still missing Nikola Pekovic (right ankle bursitis) and Kevin Martin (broken left thumb) stopped a four-game losing streak. "We needed a game like that after having a tough stretch," Rubio said. The curmudgeon coach wasnt quite satisfied, calling timeout at one point in the second quarter when a turnover gave the Nuggets a fast-break dunk off a lob pass from Randy Foye to Jordan Hamilton. That cut the lead to 47-29. "I dont know, 40 would be nice to be ahead by," Adelman said. "Id relax then. We have a tendency to give up points quickly." The Wolves trail eighth-place Phoenix by six games. Hamilton led the Nuggets with 16 points and seven assists, and J.J. Hickson added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Reeling from injuries, the Nuggets (24-27) have dropped nine of 13 and four games in a row to fall behind the Wolves (25-28) and into 11th place. "Theres really only one thing to say, and thats thank God for the All-Star break," coach Brian Shaw said. Foye, forced into a point guard role because Ty Lawson and Nate Robinson are out, said he has been playing with a strained hamstring. He then sustained a nerve injury in his leg. "It was extremely painful, but I fought through it," said Foye, who inadvertently elbowed Rubio in the chin in the first quarter. Rubio returned after receiving five stitches. The Nuggets, who have given up the third-most points per game, left shooters open all over the court. The Wolves made them pay with 52.3 per cent shooting from the floor and 20 fast-break points. "Were getting torched by everybody from the beginning of the game to the end of the game," Shaw said. The Wolves were ahead 19-3 before the Nuggets were even warmed up, and they built their lead as big as 61-37 late in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Chase Budinger, who finished with 12 points. The Nuggets never came closer than 17 points after halftime. Brewer had an uncontested dunk and then caught another laser-like outlet pass from Love like a wide receiver streaking down the football field. Brewers twisting layup rolled off the rim, but Rubio stole the ball right back for another try that Brewer converted for a 98-64 lead. "It all starts with defence," Hickson said. "If you look at the top teams in the league, all of them are top five or top 10 in defence, and thats not us right now." NOTES: Adelman has no special plans for the All-Star break. "Im just going to sit here and watch the snow," he said. Pekovic will be ice fishing again, but Adelman expressed no interest, only a bit of advice: "I hope he puts his foot in the water and ices it a little bit." ... For Hearn, this week was the realization of a dream; an experience he always hoped hed one day enjoy first-hand rather than from his TV room. "Ive always loved watching this tournament on TV," he said. "Its kind of fun waking up first thing in the morning and just lying on the couch all morning and watching the British Open." He called this week a soft introduction to the Open as conditions were quite favourable. Other than Saturday, there wasnt much in the way of harsh conditions and even that only lasted for about six holes ffor Hearn.dddddddddddd It was ripe for scoring as the leaders showed. Hearns record in majors now is exemplary. He tied for 21st at last years U.S. Open at Merion, ended up tied for 47th at the PGA last August after flirting with the lead at the start of the week and now has a fine finish in the Open, which will add to his bank account and world ranking. "Im definitely getting better and I feel my game is tailored towards major golf," he stated. "I feel like Im a guy who can make a lot of pars when you need to do that. I enjoy these majors; the atmosphere is unbelievable. Its different than anything on the regular tour and its a lot of fun." He will leave Liverpool along with a plane load of golfers and their families headed to Montreal and says despite a long week and a time change, hell be prepared. INDIANAPOLIS -- Lance Stephenson savors each opportunity he gets to beat up on his hometown teams -- especially when the Pacers are winning. On Thursday night, Indianas flamboyant guard had a big night on national television. Stephenson had a career-high 28 points, four rebounds and four assists and led the Pacers to their second-most lopsided win of the season, 117-89 over the Knicks. "If hes flashy, hes being flashy making basketball coach," coach Frank Vogel said. "One of our assistants said, Boy, I wish I had Lances energy every day. His competitive spirit is as high as anyone weve coached." Stephenson has been playing this way all season. He leads the NBA with three triple-doubles, the most of any Pacers player since Detlef Schrempf in 1992-93. With any luck, hed have a couple of more, too. And after a nasty crossover or spectacular move to the basket, he might show off some of that New York flair by wiggling his hips. But the Nets and Knicks seem to bring out the best in the Brooklyn native. This time, on a night that may serve as an audition for the All-Star selectors, he showed the whole basketball world what he could do. Stephenson went 10 of 17 from the field, 5 of 5 from the free-throw line, 3 of 7 on 3-pointers and had no turnovers in 28 minutes. His previous scoring high (26) came Dec. 23 in a 103-86 win at Brooklyn, and before this season, Stephenson had scored 22 points just two times -- once against Chicago in April 2012; the other, of course, came at Madison Square Garden last spring. Even a former Indiana University basketball star like Mike Woodson, who was drilled in defence under Bob Knight, came away impressed. "Youve really got to tip your hat to him," the Knicks coach said. "We had no answers for him." That has been a league-wide problem for Pacers foes, and not just against Stephenson. Indiana won its third straight to maintain its grip on the NBAs best record, extend its Eastern Conference lead over Miami to four games and continue its claim to the leagues best home record, 20-1. The Pacers arent slowing down, either. They beat Washington by 27 on Friday, Sacramento by 24 on Tuesday and handed what was one of the leagues hottest teams its most embarrassing road loss of the season. For the most part, Indiana has relied on its staunch defence. Stephenson and Paul George have suddenly given Indiana a devastating offensive punch, too. George added 25 points and seven rebounds on a night six players scored in double figures. The Pacers produced season highs for total points and points in a half (63) for the second straight game, and they even heeded the advice of team president Larry Bird, by cutting down their turnovers to a season-low five. "We have set a goal, and we want to be the No. 1 seed (in the East)," Stephenson said. "Every night I try to bring something to the table." The Knicks just couldnt keep up. Carmelo Anthony finished with 28 points, nine in the first six minutes and 18 in the first quarter when it was still a game. Tyson Chandler had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Raymond Felton and J.R. Smith each had 12. Smith played nearly 28 minutes after being benched in two of the Knicks previous four games. "Theyre a good team, but I dont think theyre 30 points better than our team," Woodson said after the rematch of last springs conference semifinals, which Indiana also won. "We were awful." Things started well for New York as Anthony pushed them to a 16-8 lead. But the Pacers rallied with an 11-2 run to take a 28-26 lead. Anthony bailed out the Knicks with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to make it 31-30 after one. Indiana seized control with an 11-1 spurt midway through the second quarter and pulled away late in the first half with a 16-7 run. That made it 63-48 at halftime. George opened the second half by scoring 10 points in a 15-8 spurt, which made it 78-56, and Stephenson closed it out as the Knicks couldnt get closer than 16 the rest of the way. "We understand how good we are when we run," George said. "I think thats the best way to put and the biggest way to look at it." NOTES: Kenyon Martin left in the second quarter and Amare Stoudemire followed him to the locker room in the third quarter. Both had sprained left ankles and did not return. ... Former Pacers All-Star Metta World Peace was inactive in New Yorks only regular-season game in Indianapolis. ... Its been widely reported that Callahan is looking for a seven-year term around $6 million per year. That is not accurate. Im told that it is more than $6.The Edmonton Oilers have another top-10 draft pick and with that comes another chance to build around its young core. The Oilers have the third selection in Friday nights first round, a year after taking Darnell Nurse seventh and two years removed from a streak of three consecutive No. 1 picks. But even with forwards Nail Yakupov (2012), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011), Taylor Hall (2010) and Jordan Eberle (23rd in 2008) in the fold, Edmonton isnt in a position to be position specific. "Youre just trying to get the best available player you can," head amateur scout Stu MacGregor said in a phone interview. "And if you end up with too many of one kind of player, it would then be up to management to trade whichever asset you have to attain something else at a different position." General manager Craig MacTavish has made no secret of his desire to acquire a puck-moving defenceman this off-season, which isnt exactly a unique need in todays NHL. The No. 3 pick isnt likely the place do that, unless it becomes a trade chip. The Oilers hosted defenceman Aaron Ekblad, centres Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart and multi-purpose forward Leon Draisaitl recently, MacTavish said in a radio appearance on AM-630 in Edmonton. Two of those players are sure to be available third overall, though Ekblad — a pro-ready two-way defenceman — is considered the likely No. 1 pick to Florida or whichever team trades for it. With Hall and Eberle taking up top-six wing spots, there could be room for Bennett or Reinhart, perhaps even right away, behind Nugent-Hopkins. MacTavish wants to fill in his top three lines so that grinders like Matt Hendricks and Boyd Gordon can slide down the lineup. NHL Central Scouting director Dan Marr said during the scouting combine that he sees this draft as being full of players to stock the bottom half of teams rosters.dddddddddddd The top-end talent is limited, but Marr thinks there are plenty of prospects with long-term staying power as role players. At No. 3, or if they move down slightly, the Oilers should be able to get a difference-maker. While not as good as the "incredible" 2013 crop, MacGregor thinks the top 10 players available are strong. After the first round, things get murky for the Oilers. They dont have a second-round pick — sent to the St. Louis Blues last year for winger David Perron — or a third-round pick — sent to the Los Angeles Kings in January for goaltender Ben Scrivens. MacTavish said on AM-630 that hes not in a position to trade assets to get draft picks, certainly not after dealing some away for more immediate help. With two fourth- and two fifth-rounders, Edmonton can continue to stock the cupboard, although the team hasnt unearthed a full-time NHL player beyond the third round in a decade. Unrestricted free agency will likely go a longer way toward determining the Oilers 2014-15 roster than this draft, and the chances the team has of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2006 when it went to the Stanley Cup final. MacTavish said the Oilers will chase some of the bigger names available but are more specifically looking for secondary help behind the primary pieces already in place. As trade talk heats up — MacTavish said hed had "some fairly intriguing conversations" about moving up and down from the third pick — the Oilers are in position to add salary. MacTavish hopes they can give up less by doing that and improve in the immediate future. --- Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Cheap Jerseys Store Wholesale Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic Camo China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Store Cheap Authentic Jerseys Youth NFL Jerseys Cheap ' ' '

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Police say seven teenagers wanted to see how a professional basketball player lives, so they walked through an unlocked door at the home of former Miami Heat player Ray Allen. The teens were attending a party next door early Thursday when they entered the Coral Gables home. Allens wife and children were sleeping upstairs. Police spokeswoman Kelly Denham says Allens wife woke up, screamed and the teens ran. She called police. The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1oUyO3h ) reports the party host directed police to a home where they found the 18 -and 19-year-olds. They told police they thought the Allens had moved. Dunham says officers questioned the teen but released them because there was no forced entry, no intent and nothing was taken. She says Allens wife intends to file trespassing charges. LOUIS -- Caroline Garcia is still trying to figure out her recent success. The 20-year-old almost singlehandedly led France to a 3-2 upset of the United States in Fed Cup competition Sunday. Garcia had a hand in all three of her countrys victories. She beat the USAs Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens in singles matches early in the meet before joining teammate Virginie Razzano to win the decisive doubles match. "Im not sure what Im doing differently," she said. "I dont know. I guess its working, so Ill try to keep doing it, whatever it is." France qualified for the World Group in 2015 and will compete for the Fed Cup championship. The USA is relegated to World Group II for next year. Garcia and Razzano beat Stephens and Keys 6-2, 7-5 in the fifth and deciding match of the best-of-five, two-day competition held at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University. Garcia, ranked 51st in the world, came from out of nowhere to capture her first WTA championships in winning both the singles and double titles in the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota, Columbia, on April 13. The Lyon resident carried the momentum from those victories into the Fed Cup. "She was totally amazing, unbelievable," France captain Amelie Mauresmo said. "She really rosee to the occasion and was fearless.ddddddddddddquot; Garcia and Razzano used a pair of nifty passing shots to break Stephens serve in the 11th game of the second set. The pair won the lengthy 14-point game to take a 6-5 lead. Razzano then served out the match. Garcia began her run by beating Stephens 6-3, 6-2 in the opening match on Saturday. "She was the star of the weekend," USA captain Mary Jo Fernandez said. "I never thought that she got nervous in any of the matches. Shes really aggressive and its all coming together." France played Sunday without its top player, Alize Cornet, who suffered a groin injury in a three-set loss to Keys on Saturday. Fernandez took a chance on using Keys and Stephens in the series-deciding doubles match. The duo of Lauren Davis and Christina McHale was originally slated to play. But Fernandez chose to go with the two singles players even though they were coming off tough matches earlier in the day. Keys had just 35 minutes of rest after her loss to Garcia. "I was trying to go with the players that had big weapons and (could) impose their game on the French," Fernandez said. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd knew he was going to need more than a few players to step up against Detroit on Friday night. He got even more than he expected. The Bucks, playing without John Henson and Zaza Pachulia, didnt have a single starter in double figures scoring, but still managed to beat the hapless Pistons 104-88.Milwaukee had a 69-13 edge in bench scoring, including 13 of 22 3-point shooting while Detroits reserves went 1 for 10.This was just a great team effort, Kidd said. Everyone was going to get a chance to help us win this game, and all 10 guys pitched in. We were turning down good shots in order to get better shots. Thats playing at a high level.Detroits seven-game losing streak matches the longest of Stan Van Gundys career, set when Miami started 0-7 in his rookie season of 2003-04. That team was 11 games under .500 in early March — the only time hes been further under that mark than the 3-13 Pistons are now.We should be better than this, Van Gundy said in a 90-second press conference. We have to find a way to be better.Jared Dudley scored 16 points, while former Piston Khris Middleton added 12 points for Milwaukee, which got four reserves into double figures. Andre Drummond led Detroit with 26 points and 20 rebounds, but Greg Monroe only had five points on three shots. When it was our starters against their starters, we were OK, said Van Gundy. But their bench just strafed us. We didnt have an answer for anything they did. If you look at those guys coming into this game, none of them were really shooting well from the three, but they hit everything tonight. The Bucks dominated the boards in Tuesdays win, but the Pistons were able to hold them in check in the first half of the rematch. This time, Detroits problem came on defence, as Milwaukee scored 53 points on 42 field-goal attempts to take a 53-45 lead. Dudley was the biggest contributor, scoring 11 points in 10 minutes. We went with a small lineup and just shared the ball, said Ersan Illyasova, who had 22 points and eight rebounds. We spread the floor, we found opportunities and we knocked down shots.Jabari Parker kept the Bucks in front with a pair of baseline dunks, and 10 points in the quarter from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope kept the Pistons close — down 74-69 going into the fourth.Milwaukee scored the first six points of the fourth period, as the Pistons offence struggled to move the ball effectively in halfcourt sets. Detroit was reduced to bombing away from outside, a strategy that allowed the Bucks to pull away with little trouble.Everybodys trying to get on the same page, but when we get out there, it isnt working, said D.J. Augustin, who went 1 for 7 from the floor. Its rough right now, and we know how the fans are looking at us, but we dont want to lose.___TIP INSBucks: Giannis Antetokoumpo drew gasps from the crowd with a spectacular basket in the second quarter. Antetokoumpo took off from outside the 3-point line, and was still able to hit a finger roll at the hoop without travelling. He made a similar play later in the quarter, finishing the basket despite being fouled by Josh Smith. . Pachulia missed the game for personal reasons.Pistons: PG Brandon Jennings missed his third straight game — two against his former team — with a sprained left thumb. The Pistons acquired Jennings from the Bucks for Brandon Knight and Middleton before last season.UP NEXTBucks: Host the Rockets on Saturday.Pistons: Host the Warriors on Sunday. He missed one last night that he thought he should have made. He made up for it tonight, said Celtics head coach Brad Stevens. Bradley finished with a team-best 18 points for the Celtics, with Brandon Bass picking up 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Jared Sullinger had 14 and eight boards. Jameer Nelson poured in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting for the Nuggets, who dropped their fifth straight contest. Arron Aflalo picked up 20 points and J.J. Hickson totaled 15 with 14 rebounds. The Celtics were behind 61-49 with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter but eventually took a 70-69 lead on a Marcus Smart free throw with 2:06 left. Marcus Thorntons jumper gave them a 75-74 edge after three. Bass later hit two from the line and Boston was ahead 86-80 with 7:34 left in regulation, but Hickson, Afflalo and Nelson hit shots -- the last one a triple by the former Saint Josephs star who was acquired by the Nuggets from the Celtics 10 days ago -- and Denver was back on top 87-86. Each side traded turns with the lead until Bradleys shot from beyond the arc made it 98-96. Wilson Chandler then missed the second of two from the line and Nelson missed a jumper before Bradley connected on a two-pointer for a three- point Boston edge. Hickson made a layup with 14.7 on the clock, and thouugh Evan Turner missed both free-throw tries, Nelson couldnt get a step-back jumper to go with 1.dddddddddddd4 remaining. Were trying to find a way, Faried said. Were trying to fight and claw, but we didnt claw enough. We didnt have enough fight in us. We had the last shot. When Jameer put it up, we thought it was going to go in. We even tried to get the rebound to put it in, but too little too late. Nelson scored 11 points and the Nuggets led 28-20 after one quarter, and were up by as many as 10 in the second quarter before taking a 48-42 edge to the break. Hickson and Kenneth Faried converted dunks in the first two minutes of the third and Denver was ahead 52-42. They maintained that comfortable margin for several minutes before Boston began its comeback. Its great from a progress standpoint and you hope you can build off of it, Stevens said of winning back-to-back nights on the road. Bostons six-game west coast swing continues Sunday in Oakland against red-hot Golden State. Game Notes Boston had lost five straight in Denver, since claiming a 114-76 decision on Feb. 23, 2009 ... The Celtics also snapped a losing clip of 28 straight defeats when trailing by 12-or-more points at any juncture in a game ... Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds in defeat ... Turner scored 10 points and dished out six assists for Boston ... The contest featured nine ties and 17 lead changes. CLEVELAND -- Moments before introducing their three newest players, the Browns sacked two disappointing quarterbacks. Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell got dumped 33 minutes apart. Clevelands QB carousel has never spun faster. Weeden, a former minor league baseball player who couldnt build on a promising rookie season, was let go Wednesday less than two years after the Browns selected him in the first round with the idea he would solve a position that has haunted the franchise since its expansion return 15 years ago. Weedens run was brief and forgettable. Campbells was even shorter. Shortly after the Browns sent out a release about Weeden, they emailed a nearly identical one concerning Campbell, who went 1-7 as a starter last season. Though expected, the moves were somewhat stunning since they trumped the introductions of safety Donte Whitner, linebacker Karlos Dansby and cornerback Isaiah Trufant, free agents who passed physicals and signed free agent contracts as blizzard-like conditions battered the teams facility in Berea. Theres always a storm brewing for the Browns, who have started 20 QBs since 1999. Weeden never panned out, and it wasnt entirely the first-round draft picks fault. He played under two coaches and in two systems in two seasons. After throwing for 3,385 yards as a rookie, he lost his job early last season after he got hurt and Brian Hoyer came off the bench and led the Browns to two victories. Weeden was re-inserted as the starter when Hoyer suffered a season-ending knee injury, but the 30-year-old lost his job again, this time to Campbell. Weeden passed for 5,116 yards and went 5-15 as a starter. He also became a target for Cleveland fan abuse, and his release will allow him to start fresh somewhere else. "First and foremost, the Browns would like to thank Brandon and his agent for being true professionals," new general manager Ray Farmer said. "The circumstances in which he found himself were not easy for him or the team. After discussions with Brandon and his agent, wed like to give him the ability to pursue other opportunities." Weedens release was quickly followed by the Browns cutting ties with Campbell, who was due a $250,000 roster bonus on Thursday. Campbell had some positive moments but not enough of them for the Browns, who signed the 32-year-old veteran as a free agent last March. "We appreciate Jasons contributions to the Browns in 2013," Farmer said. "Hes a respected veteran player in this league. We felt like at this time, early in the free-agency period, we would give him a better opportunity to move forward. We wish Jason the best in his future endeavours." As for their future, the Browns are expected to draft a quarterback in Mays draft. They own the No. 4 overall pick and its possible Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel, Central Floridas Blake Bortles or Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater could be available when the Browns are on the clock. However, they may want to wait and take a quarterback later in the draft to groom behind Hoyer. Soon after dumping Weeden and Campbell, the Browns welcomed Whitner, Dansby and Trufant, who beamed smiles as they posed for photos with new Browns coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer. The Browns entered free agency $49 million under the salary cap, but bit off a chunk by giving Whitner a four-year, $28 million deal and Dansby one worth $24 million over four years. Its a homecoming for Whitner, who grew up in Cleveland played at Ohio State. "Its not often you can play high school, college and in the NFL in the same state," said Whitner, who spent the past three years in San Francisco and is excited for a chance to spend more time with two young children who live in Cleveland. "I know the history of this city; I know the history of this football team. I know it recently hasnt been good, but I know with a lot of hard work, a lot of good leadership and a lot of good football, physical football, we can change this thing around." Farmer excused himself after introducing the players, saying "theres more work to be done." The Browns were interested in signing lock-down cornerback Darrelle Revis, but after he reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with New England, Farmer may turn his focus to the offence in the coming days. He signed Cincinnati slot receiver Andrew Hawkins to an offer sheet on Tuesday, and the Bengals have five days to match it or lose the speedy wideout. Also, the Browns still dont know what will happen with Pro Bowl centre Alex Mack. The team placed its transition tag on Mack last week, and now must wait to see if hes offered a contract by other teams. The Browns also are reportedly interested in running back Ben Tate, who rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns with Houston last season. Cleveland has been in the market for a feature back since trading Trent Richardson to Indianapolis. Nick Ahmed Diamondbacks Jersey . Bradwell was scheduled to become a free agent Tuesday. Jake Lamb Diamondbacks Jersey . There will be no Down Under four-peat for Djokovic, as the eighth-seeded Swiss slugger Wawrinka outlasted the second seed 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 at Melbourne Parks Rod Laver Arena in yet another five-set thriller in their burgeoning rivalry.PHILADELPHIA -- Its far from a coincidence that the Edmonton Oilers went big with the third pick in the NHL draft. In taking German centre Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers added some much-needed size and depth at a position of great importance. "Its not a stretch to say were really happy and think that we filled a tremendous need for our hockey club and I think is going to have a real significant impact over time with our team," general manager Craig MacTavish said Friday night. "You combine him with our No. 1 pick last year (Darnell Nurse), and we start to see some size and quite a bit of character continue to come into our dressing room." Beyond 2011 No. 1 pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers are thin at centre. And in Draisaitl, the highest-drafted German in NHL history, they get a six-foot-one, 208-pound player who has drawn comparisons to Anze Kopitar and Jaromir Jagr. Playing for the WHLs Prince Albert Raiders, Draisaitl had 38 goals and 67 assists in 64 games this past season as he developed his defensive game and faceoff prowess. Hes from Cologne but came to develop in the Canadian junior system and will remain in North America this summer to train. There are still things Draisaitl believes he needs to improve this off-season but the physically mature 18-year-old also thinks hell be ready to play in the NHL in 2014-15. MacTavish cant make such a guarantee. "Obviously we project the team to be much more productive and much deeper than we were this year, and thatll be a significant factor," he said. "We want to make sure that if we do put young kids into our lineup that they have a chance to have success, and thatll be a big factor along with how well he adapts to the NHL game at training camp." Just having a chance to earn a spot at training camp is a nice opportunity for Draisaitl, who understands he wont just be handed a job playing alongside Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle. "Im going to have to do my job and earrn my spot if I want to play in that league and on that team," Draisaitl said.dddddddddddd "I think theyre moving forward for sure and they made some good trades, (David) Perron, and the guys are getting older and more mature. This is just awesome right now." Draisaitl was thrilled to put on the same orange and blue of Edmonton stars of the past, most of whom had their primes before he was born. "Theyve had so many great players on their team: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, MacTavish -- all those guys are stars in the league, and wearing the same jersey as they do is unbelievable," he said. MacTavish joked that he owed Draisaitl $100 for dropping his name in that group. More importantly for the GMs current job, he hopes Draisaitl can develop into an important piece of this already young core. Draisaitl fills a specific role, too, as the Oilers seek a variety of talent at forward. "(He) protects the puck and is a real offensive-zone player," MacTavish said. "Weve got a lot of skill, but were in need of somebody down low thats capable of sustaining the play. We have David Perron that fits that bill and now Leon will be a guy that can really protect the puck." If Draisaitl develops as scouts expect, he would slot in as the Oilers No. 2 centre of the future. His size mixed with Halls speed could be a tantalizing combination. "Hes probably the fastest skater in the league and hes an exciting player to watch," Draisaitl said. "It might be a good fit, but you never know." MacTavish would love to spend Saturday adding more depth to the organization, but the Oilers dont have a second- or a third-round pick after trades for Perron and goaltender Ben Scrivens. And he doesnt expect to be able to get into the second. "Well be sitting on our hands, it looks like, through the second or third round," MacTavish said. "Hopefully the scouts can pull a few of those impact players out of the later picks." CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- LeBron James stripped the ball at midcourt, raced the length of the floor and lifted off for a powerful one-handed dunk. Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, seated on the Charlotte bench, could only look on helplessly. James was taking over and the Miami Heat, well, they were starting to look like the Miami Heat of the past two seasons. Unlike the first two games of the series, James made sure this game wouldnt be close. James had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and the Heat easily defeated the Bobcats 98-85 Saturday night to take a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference first round. Dwyane Wade added 17 points for the Heat, who can close out the best-of-seven series Monday night. "We were locked in on what needs to be done and our keys to win this game," James said. James went 10 of 18 from the field and pushed his record to 18-0 against the Bobcats since joining the Heat in 2010. Miami has won 19 straight overall against Charlotte. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said his players took a "professional approach" following a 101-97 win Game 2 that came down the wire, dedicating themselves to fixing their mistakes rather than being satisfied with the win. Now he said the challenge is closing out the Bobcats. "You dont want a series to go longer than it needs to," Spoelstra said. Al Jefferson finished with 20 points -- 15 in the first quarter -- for the Bobcats, who are still searching for the first post-season win in franchise history. After trailing most of the first half, the Heat took control in the final four minutes of the second quarter. Mario Chalmers gave Miami a 42-40 lead on a 3-pointer, Norris Cole hit a 5-foot bank shot and then another 3 from the left wing helping the Heat close the half on a 16-4 run. Miami made 8 of their first 11 3-pointers. The half, which had started with so much energy and promise for the Bobcats, ended with a colossal mistake by guard Gerald Henderson. With the clock winding down, he turned the ball over in the backcourt with 2 seconds left and then fouled James while the Miami forward was attempting a 3-pointer. James made the Bobcats pay by sinking three free throws with 0.2 left on the clock to give the Heat a 58-46 advantage at the break. "We butchered the last three-and-a-half minutes of the first half," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Said James: "I put it on my shoulders tonight to close out the quarter the right way. And I think that resulted in the way we started the third quarter." The second half was all Miami. James, who was booed loudly almost every time he touched the ball, hit a key 3-pointer and had the breakaway dunk off a steal from Josh McRoberts in the third quarter to help push the lead to 26 midway through the third. The Bobcats never mounted a series challenge after that point. James has never lost a first-round series with his teams in Cleveland and Miami going a combined 8-0. There was some intrigue entering the game. James was outspoken on Friday after taking an elbow to the throat from McRoberts in Game 2, although no flagrant foul was called on the floor. The two made contact early in the first quarter when James drove baseline and McRoberts attempted to take a charge, but officials called a blocking foul. James made the shot but missed the ensuing free throw. McRoberts walked away after the foul clapping his hands, refusing to get upset by a call that could have easily gone the other way. Slowing down Jefferson was crucial for the Heat. He hit 7 of 9 shots to start the game helped Charlotte take a 27-23 lead after the first quarter. By the middle of the second quarter, Bobcats fans, wearing all white, began chanting "M-V-P M-V-P" as Jefferson shot free throws. But Charlottes enthusiasm was short-lived as James and the Heat began flexing its muscles. Jefferson was held to just five points in the final three quarters in large part due to Chris Bosh. "They just got up in the passing lanes and made it hard for us to get Al the ball," Clifford said. "Youve got to give them credit. Their defence was terrific." The Heat also turned up the pressure on point guard Kemba Walker, trapping him out near half court. The Heat forced 14 turnovers. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Derick Brassard and Derek Stepan scored third-period goals, and Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. It was the first game back in Columbus for Rangers star Rick Nash, the Blue Jackets franchise leader in goals, assists and games. He was given a standing ovation during a video tribute in the first period, but was booed loud and long after a second-period, two-handed shove up high on Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Carl Hagelin added an empty-net goal, and defenceman Anton Stralman had two assists for the Rangers, who moved two points ahead of the Blue Jackets in the tight Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference playoff races. Nick Foligno scored for Columbus, 7-2-2 in its last 11 games. Bobrovsky made 29 saves. Both teams came in with 78 points, the third most in the Metropolitan. The Blue Jackets have played one fewer game. After two scoreless periods, Columbus took a 1-0 lead when Foligno intercepted Benoit Pouilots pass and scored his 18th goal of the season with a wrist shot from the high slot at 1:12. Just 44 seconds later, the Rangers countered when Ryan McDonagh carried the puck along the back wall and then fed Stepan for his 14th goal. With 8:29 left, Brassard -- who played his first five NHL seasons with the Blue Jackets -- took a pass along the back wall from Stralman and flipped the puck between his legs to the doorstep. Brassard then pivoted and jammed a shot in off Bobrovskys pad. Nash, then the Blue Jackets captain, requested a trade in early 2012 and was finally dealt on July 23, 2012. Nash was sent along with a minor-league defenceman and a 2013 third-round draft pick to the Rangers for centres Artem Anisimov and Brandon Dubinsky, defenceman Tim Erixon and a 2013 first-round pick (Kerby Rychel). Nash is Columbus franchise leader in games with 674 (next on the list is 131 games behind), goals with 289 (by 169), assists with 258 (by 54) and points with 547 (by 230). Most of the capacity crowd of 18,513 gave him a standing ovation during the video tribute, although there were still some boos. All of that good will evaporated in the second period after Nash rushed the net and had a goal disallowed for interfering with Bobrovsky. As Nash went to get his stick, Bobrovsky picked it up with his stick and then dropped it as Nash reached for it. Nash then hit Bobrovsky high with both hands. That touched off five two-man scuffles and sent Nash to the box for roughing. When the cameras showed him in the penalty box, the majority of the crowd booed loudly. The crowd roared early when Nash was hit and dumped to the ice by rising young star, Ryan Johansen. Another time, Bobrovsky appeared to slip his stick between Nashs skates to knock him down. There was also a fight, some chippiness on both sides, and one two-man penalty-kill by the Blue Jackets. The Rangers had 30 seconds of a 5 on 3 advantage and got off two shots, but Bobrovsky turned both aside. In the opening seconds of the third, Nash held onto the stick of Matt Calvert for several seconds. That led to a fight as the crowd roared. NOTES: The Blue Jackets have 12 regular-season games left. ... Former Columbus RW Derek Dorsett was a late addition to the Rangers lineup in place of Daniel Carcillo, who was a healthy scratch. ... The Rangers are 6-5-1 since the Olympic break, 18-10-2 in 2014. ... The Rangers had been in Columbus since Tuesday night while the Blue Jackets played at Montreal on Thursday night, winning 3-2. However, the intensity and physicality that has characterized the postseason so far has caught Gretzky by surprise. "Its a little bit risqué right now," Gretzky told Philadelphia radio station 97.NEW YORK -- The last time Masahiro Tanaka lost a regular season game, Mark Teixeira was a reliable slugger in the heart of the Yankees batting order. Since August 2012, Teixeira has hurt a wrist and hamstring, missing most of last season and half of the first month of this season. Hes back looking like his usual bashing self -- just in time to help Tanaka on Saturday. Teixeira homered for the fourth time in his last five games and drove in three runs as the Yankees rallied past the Tampa Bay Rays 9-3 and stopped a season-high, three-game losing streak. "You want to put up numbers. You want to put up those home runs, and you want to drive in runs for your team, and when you start seeing that, then it makes you feel better about where you are physically," Teixeira. "Its been a struggle the last year coming back from this injury, but so far the results have been good this year." Teixeira reached 30 homers and 100 RBIs in each of his first three years with the Yankees before dropping to 24 homers and and 84 RBIs in 123 games in 2012. In 14 games this season, he has five homers to tie for the team lead and has 10 RBIs. "I never doubted him," manager Joe Girardi said. "I said all along he was a guy who could be 30 and a hundred for us." Tanaka extended his regular-season unbeaten streak to 40 starts, and Kelly Johnson hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the sixth inning off Josh Lueke (0-2), who also gave up a run-scoring single to Teixeira and a sacrifice fly to Alfonso Soriano in a two-run seventh. Tanaka (4-0) gave up solo homers to Desmond Jennings and Wil Myers around an RBI single by Ryan Hanigan, falling behind 3-0 by the fourth and looking shaky by the standard set over his first five big league starts. "I think I was able to get my rhythm back as I got deeper into the game," Tanaka said through an interpreter. New Yorks offence did the rest. Teixeira hit a two-run homer in tthe fourth, and Jacoby Ellsburys RBI single in the fifth tied it at 3.dddddddddddd. Signed by the Yankees from Japans Rakuten Golden Eagles during the off-season, Tanaka allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings, striking out his last two batters to give him five or the day. "He just grinded it out," said Tampa Bays Matt Joyce, who struck out attempting to bunt for a hit in the first inning. "He was a little frustrated with himself at times. You could tell. Olympic gold medallist Jon Montgomery was not named to the national skeleton team for Sochi, as its roster was announced for the 2014 Olympic Winter games on Wednesday. Sarah Reid and Mellisa Hollingsworth, along with Eric Neilson and John Fairbairn were named to the team, while a third racer for both men and ladies could be named depending on the remaining results on the intercontinental circuit. Montgomery - from Russell, Man. - has already said that this year may be his last in skeleton, despite the fact that he would have to win his final four races next month to earn the third mens spot. Montgomery won gold in the mens skeleton event in Vancouver in 2010 and became an instant celebrity with his colourful personality. Darren Helm Jersey . Curtis Joseph Jersey . -- The Denver Broncos are shuffling their offensive line this off-season and Orlando Franklin provided some insight into their plans Monday by tweeting that hes moving from right tackle to left guard. Eric Tangradi Jersey . Lack replaced an injured Roberto Luongo late in the first period then watched defenceman Chris Tanev score the winning goal midway through the third as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Jets 2-1 in a tight NHL game. Scott Cullen looks at Saturdays playoff action, including tough times for the undisciplined Chicago Blackhawks, Matt Calvert lifting the Blue Jackets to their first playoff win, and Nathan MacKinnon putting on a show as Colorado takes a 2-0 series lead over Minnesota. HEAVY HOCKEY The Chicago Blackhawks are within two minutes of having a 2-0 series lead, surrendering tying goals late in the third period (1:45 remaining in Game One, six seconds left in Game Two) of the first two games in St. Louis, leading to 4-3 overtime defeats in both games. Being that close doesnt amount to much now, though, as Chicago is facing a 2-0 series deficit along with the possibility that a top pair defenceman, Brent Seabrook, could be suspended for a crushing hit on Blues C David Backes, whose status has to be questionable in the immediate aftermath. Seabrook had a goal and an assist in Game Two, before taking a major penalty for his hit on Backes wit 4:51 remaining in the third period. If Seabrook is suspended, Sheldon Brookbank could move into the Chicago lineup, but Backes potential absence also causes issues for the Blues. Even though the St. Louis lineup was bolstered by the return of RW T.J. Oshie, their top three healthy centres after Backes in Game Two were Vladimir Sobotka, Maxim Lapierre and Derek Roy. If Backes is out (and Patrik Berglund is already out), then St. Louis may have to shuffle Steve Ott to the middle and add a winger, Dimitrij Jaskin or Brenden Morrow, to the lineup. Leading the way for St. Louis in Game Two was D Kevin Shattenkirk, who had a goal and two assists, and also happened to be break-even in Corsi%, which was rare on a Blues team that was easily handled by Chicago at even strength. The problem for the Blackhawks, however, was an appalling lack of discipline, as Chicago was shorthanded nine times, including 11 minutes of shorthanded time in the final 15 minutes of the game. A positive for the Blackhawks was the performance of RW Marian Hossa, who matched his season high with eight shots on goal in Game Two. Blackhawks C Jonathan Toews, who was on the ice for both the tying and game-winning goals against, had a dominant possession game (85% Corsi%), getting the better of a strength-on-strength matchup against the Blues top line of Backes, Alexander Steen and T.J. Oshie. Returning to the lineup for the first time since a late-season concussion, Oshies Corsi% for the game was 13.0%. The results through the first two games could have gone either way, so its not as if Chicago is out of the running as they head home for Game Three. However, their margin for error is gone. They need to get on the board with a win if they are going to make a series out of this. JACKETS EVEN UP Matt Calverts second goal of the game, 1:10 into double overtime, earned the Columbus Blue Jackets the first playoff win in the franchises history. Calvert, who was favourably included in my piece on which fighters can handle more playing time, played a career-high 22:26 in the double-overtime affair, having possession success with linemates Cam Atkinson and Brandon Dubinsky. Blue Jackets D Jack Johhnson led all skaters with 38:21 of ice time and scored the game-tying goal with 6:01 remaining in the third period.dddddddddddd Johnson now has 15 points in 14 career playoff games. Among defencemen with at least a dozen career playoff games, Johnsons 1.07 points per game in the postseason ranks second, behind only Bobby Orr. Blue Jackets C Ryan Johansen added a goal and an assist, while D David Savard contributed two assists to the winning effort. On the Penguins side, RW Brian Gibbons scored a pair of goals, and Sidney Crosby had a couple of assists, but no other Penguins forwards got on the scoresheet. D Paul Martin had two assists while Matt Niskanen added a goal and an assist. Perhaps the most troubling issue for Pittsburgh in Game Two was the play of D Kris Letang, who was stomped (32.5% Corsi%) in possession terms. His minus-14 Corsi was his lowest of the season. Even so, his 27:40 of ice time was behind only Paul Martin (34:07) and Brooks Orpik (28:02) on the Penguins blueline. Columbus D Fedor Tyutin left the game with a presumed upper-body injury after taking a couple of hard hits and playing just 6:55. If Tyutin is out, Dalton Prout or Nick Schultz are available to join the Columbus lineup, but Savard is the one who moves up the depth chart. He played 33:46 in Game Two. Earning the Game Two win ought to give the Blue Jackets some feeling of belonging in the postseason. They can compete with the Penguins, play them close enough that G Sergei Bobrovsky (who stopped 39 of 42 shots in Game Two) has a chance to make a difference. MACKINNONS COMING OUT PARTY 18-year-old Avalanche rookie RW Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists in Colorados 4-2 Game Two win over the Minnesota Wild, giving the Avs a 2-0 lead in the series, and MacKinnon seven points through two games. There is a good chance that MacKinnon is on his way to the best playoff scoring for an 18-year-old in league history, as Jaromir Jagr holds the current mark with 13 playoff points in 1991. The line of MacKinnon, LW Gabriel Landeskog (two goals) and C Paul Stastny (one goal, three assists) carried the day for the Avalanche, with MacKinnons speed and playmaking ability creating huge difficulty for the Wild, even though Minnesota frequently had their top defence pairing of Ryan Suter and Jonas Brodin matched up against them. Though he wasnt particularly to blame for Colorados first three goals, Wild G Ilya Bryzgalov was pulled with 8:01 remaining in the second period, replaced by Darcy Kuemper, the rookie who last played March 27. Kuemper stopped all 14 shots he faced. That Colorado has high-end skill up front comes as no surprise, nor is it shocking that G Semyon Varlamov has been the better of the goaltenders in the series but, coming home for Game Three, the Wild need their own top forwards to answer the bell and hope that whomever they go with in net, Kuemper or Bryzgalov, will give them a chance to get back in the series. MINNEAPOLIS -- During a weekend trip to Boston, All-Star forward Kevin Love has been taking pictures with fans and seeing the sights, leading Celtics fans to speculate that hes going to follow in the footsteps of Kevin Garnett as the next Minnesota star to come to town and turn around a struggling franchise. Not so fast, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said. "The last I knew Kevin was under contract with us, and I expect him to be playing for us next year," Saunders said Sunday after a workout of draft prospects. "I dont really dictate where guys go on vacation or what they do. They can go wherever they want to go." Love can opt out of his contract after next season, and the three-time All-Star has yet to make the playoffs in six years with the Timberwolves. He was also angered when former executive David Kahn refused to give him a full, five-year extension and instead gave him a four-year deal with a player option after three. Thats led many to believe that he will leave next summer to play for a contender in a bigger market. "Yo (at)kevinlove if you need advice on moving from Minnesota to Boston just let me know .CityOfChamps," tweeted Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who spent six years with the Minnesota Twins before signing with the Red Sox as a free agent and winning three World Series titles. The situation has prompted the Timberwolves to consider a trade to avoid losing Love without compensation. But Saunders has made it clear that he doesnt feel as though he has to make a move this summer. He views Love as one of the top offensive players in the league, a 25-year-old who has improved his game every off-season. So if other teams do want to get their hands on one of the NBAs top power forwards, it wont be easy. "I know theres a feeding frenzy out there from a lot of teams," Saunders said. "Unfortunately, they have no say. I plan on Kevin being here." If Saunders was posturing, he has good reason. The draft isnt until June 26, and the best offers from teams desperate to land Love dont figure to start rolling in until the week of the draft, or perhaps not even until draft night, and Saunders has plenty of options. He could move him right around draft time for what is expected to be a package that includes high picks and a veteran player or two. He could wait for July 1 and look to build a package around more established, veteran talent. Or he could hold on to Love, try to add a few pieces to a team that finished 10th in the West, and hire the right coach to replace the retired Rick Adelman and show Love that the team is headed in the right direction. It worked for the Portland Trail Blazers with LaMarcus Aldridge, and it worked years ago for the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. The Wolves can also pay Love about $26.5 million more than any other team. And if Love still does depart after next summer, the Wolves wont be left empty-handed. Theyll have about $17 million in extra salary cap room to attack the free agent market, though luring stars to a wintry climate to play for a team that hasnt made the playoffs since 2004 has always proved to be a challenge. The next big step will be hiring a coach. The Wolves had discussions with Memphis Dave Joerger over Memorial Day weekend, but Joerger stayed with the Grizzlies, who sweetened his contract to remain with the 50-win team. Saunders said he will meet with Wolves owner Glen Taylor this week to evaluate the search, which has been influenced some by the uncertainty surrounding Love. When asked if he would have a coach in place by the June 26 draft, Saunders said "theres probably a better chance that we would than we wouldnt. Were not going to put a time frame on it." As for those excited Celtics fans, Saunders said they should calm down. But he knows they wont. "Theyre the same fans who thought they had Tim Duncan," he joked. "They still think they got Tim Duncan in the draft. Im not really sure, but the last I looked he was playing for San Antonio, Old Man Riverwalk." Bennie Logan Titans Jersey . The Jets have now won nine of their last 11, and five of their last six road games. With the win they moved to within two points of Vancouver in the west, the Canucks holding down the eighth spot. Vancouver lost in Boston, while the other big game saw Dallas win in Phoenix.MILWAUKEE -- Goran Dragic tumbled to the floor after a hard foul. When he finally got up, he was holding his elbow. That didnt stop him from sealing the game for the Phoenix Suns. Dragic scored 10 of his 30 points in the final 3:28, helping the Suns beat the Milwaukee Bucks 126-117 on Wednesday night. "Emotions," Dragic said. "You are so much in the zone, the adrenaline keeps you going." Dragic hit the floor hard after a late foul by Larry Sanders, but was able to stay in the game -- and keep scoring, including a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. But he was on the bench with a wrap on his left elbow in the closing minutes, and was escorted to the locker room with 52 seconds remaining. Dragic said an X-ray was negative, but his elbow was swollen. "Im a little bit concerned," Dragic said. "Right now it is too soon. We will see how I am feeling in the morning. Im a quick healer." Gerald Green scored 23 and Marcus Morris had 16 points off the bench for the Suns, who have won the first three games of a four-game road trip. Suns coach Jeff Hornacek wasnt pleased that his team frittered away a few big leads. "When we get up, we have a tendency to relax," Hornacek said. "If you are not scoring, at least play defence." Ersan Ilyasova scored 27 points and Brandon Knight added 24 for the Bucks, who have only one win in January. A sign of the times in a tough season: The biggest ovation of the night went not to a Bucks player but rather to former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, who was sitting courtside. Still Bucks coach Larry Drew was pleased with the way his team responded from a pair of blowout losses. "There were some positives to come out of this game, and were going to continue to try to build on the positives," Drew said. And Drew was plenty impressed by Dragic. "I think a lot of people used to look at him as a reserve," Drew said. "But he has shown that hes a starter. Not only is he a starter, butt he has emerged as one of the top point guards in our league.dddddddddddd" Leading by 12 at halftime, the Suns let the Bucks back in the game during a third-quarter spurt led by Knights ability to draw fouls and hit free throws. Milwaukee cut the lead to six before Green drained three 3-pointers in a stretch of just over two minutes -- gesturing to the crowd with three fingers on his way back down the court -- but Milwaukee hung close and went into the fourth quarter trailing 91-84. Green said he enjoyed going back and forth with the crowd. "Loved it," Green said. "Best part of the game to me. It kept fueling me up. It got me going. It is exciting playing against a crowd like that." The Bucks cut the lead to five on a fast-break slam dunk by rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo with 7:27 left in the game, but Phoenix responded with a 7-2 run. Dragic hit a 3-pointer with 4:04 left, giving the Suns a 114-102 lead, and hit two more 3-pointers to seal the game. Sanders played for Milwaukee despite a recent illness, coming off the bench to score 14 and grab nine rebounds. "They really capitalize on mistakes," Sanders said of the Suns. "They get out in the open floor and they run, they finish in transition and get fouled -- make something happen." Milwaukee was without guard O.J. Mayo because of flu-like symptoms, and forward Ekpe Udoh continued to sit out with a sprained left ankle. The Suns led by 12 at halftime, thanks to a second-quarter surge led by Dragic and Morris, who caused fits for Antetokounmpo on defence. A 25-7 run in the middle of the second quarter powered the Suns to a lead as large as 23 before the Bucks made up some ground going into the half. Notes: Antetokounmpo was selected to play in the "Rising Stars Challenge" during All-Star weekend. Coach Larry Drew is glad a national audience will get a chance to watch him. "It gives everybody a chance to see who he is now," Drew said. ... Green was called for a technical foul in the third quarter. Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Cardale Jones threw a touchdown pass and ran for another, while Ezekiel Elliott added a rushing score and Ohio State leads Oregon 21-10 at halftime in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Jones was 10-of-15 for 171 yards to go with 48 yards on the ground and Elliott carried the ball 11 times for 98 yards for the fourth-seeded Buckeyes, who defeated top-ranked Alabama 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl to reach the title game. Heisman trophy winner Marcus Mariota completed 18-of-23 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown for No. 2 Oregon, which routed Florida State 59-20 in the Rose Bowl to get to Monday nights contest. The Buckeyes put up 21 straight points after Oregon scored a touchdown on its opening drive. Ohio State found the end zone on consecutive possessions late in the first quarter after punting on their initial series. Jones fired a 26-yard strike on a 3rd-and-8 to Corey Smith, then rolled left and tossed another 26-yard completion to Jalin Marshall, who corralled the wheel-route pass off the back of Erick Dargan along the left sideline. Marshall prolonged the drive when he fought for the first-down marker after going in motion and receiving a pop pass from Jones on a 4th-and-2. Elliott then zoomed through the secondary off the left side of the line for a 33-yard touchdown that tied the game at 7-7. Marshall returned a punt 17 yards to the Oregon 46 and Elliott later barrelled to the 1 following a 17-yard run. Jones then flipped a 1-yard TD pass to Nick Vannett in the left flat with 1:08 left in the first quarter. After a rolling Jones lofted a 43-yard completion to Devin Smith on a 3rd- and-12 in the second quarter, he snuck in from a yard out three plays later for a 21-7 Buckeyes advantage with 4:49 to go in the half. Aidan Schneider nailed a 28-yard field goal in the final minute to get the Ducks within 21-10. The Ducks, who turned the ball over just 10 times during the regular season, had a pair of close calls on their opening drive. Thomas Tyner lost the football after dashing through a huge hole off right guard, but it bounced right back to him and he gained 12 yards. Mariota later fumbled when he picked his way for seven yards on a scramble, but a replay showed that his knee was down. Mariota then capped the initial 11-play, 75-yard march when he eluded pressure, stepped up in the pocket and hit Keanon Lowe for a 7-yard score. Oregons first half was defined by miscues. Mariotas first two incompletions were third-down drops and the Ducks werent able to capitalize on a pair of Ohio State fumbles. The aggressive Ducks elected to go for it on a 4th-and-goal from the OSU 3 following a fumbled exchange between Jones and Elliott, but the Buckeyes stuffed Tyner at the 1. Oregon then went three-and-out after recovering a Corey Smith fumble following a 47-yard reception. While the offence was limited to run-scoring singles by Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Swisher in the sixth inning, five pitchers combined on a five-hitter for a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. "We got a couple of big hits and we were able to piece it together," Indians manager Terry Francona said. Scott Atchison (4-0) pitched 1 2-3 innings and worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth. Cody Allen worked a shaky ninth for his 14th save. J.P. Arencibia drew a leadoff walk and Leonys Martin singled, but Allen regrouped. Pinch-hitter Jim Adduci struck out and Rougned Odor fouled out before Daniel Robertson struck out to end the 24-pitch inning. "Luckily, I was able to make some pitches to get out of it," Allen said. "Youre going to get in jams. Youre facing very good hitters who are going to beat you. Its just part of being a closer." The win moved the Indians (55-55) back to .500 while the Rangers have dropped 18 of 21 away from home and are the worst team in the majors (43-67). The Indians pounded out 16 hits in a 12-2 win Friday, but couldnt do anything with Texas starter Miles Mikolas, who went into the game with an 8.54 ERA, through five innings. That finally changed in the sixth. Jason Kipnis started the rally with a single, took second on a sacrifice and went to third on a groundout. The Rangers elected to walk Carlos Santana intentionally on a 2-0 count, but Chisenhall foiled that strategy by dropping a single into centre field on the first pitch. Swisher lined a single to right for a two-run lead. "Lonnie found some outfield grass and Swish got the hit," Francona said. "He tried to get in on Chiz and he jammed him, but there was just enough there for him to hit," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "That was a tough break for Miles." T.J. House, called up from the minors before the game, pitched five scoreless innings for Cleveland. House, who struck out seven and allowed three hits, was pulled in the sixth when Elvis Andrus drew a leadoff walk and took seconnd on Alex Rios infield hit.dddddddddddd. Atchison retired Adrian Beltre on a groundout that moved both runners into scoring position. Andrus was tagged out in a rundown trying to score on Arencibias grounder. Martin struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. Mikolas (1-4) allowed two runs in seven innings. BIG FAN Francona led his players and coaching staff to the pregame ceremony in which the Indians unveiled a statue of Jim Thome. As an opposing manager, Francona always respected Thomes power. "If you go to a game, you dont really want to go get something to eat when hes hitting," Francona said. His strategy to stop Thome seldom worked. "When he walked to the plate Id gave him the bunt sign," Francona said. "Hed always smile and hit one in the upper deck." TAKE IT INSIDE The plan for Indians outfielder Michael Bourn (strained left hamstring) to run the bases was scrubbed by an afternoon thunderstorm. So he was sent across the street to Quicken Loans Arena, where the Cleveland Gladiators were hosting an Arena League playoff game. Bases were set up on the carpeted playing surface and Bourn was able to get in his work before the football game. TRAINERS ROOM Rangers: Catcher Geovany Soto (strained right groin) was scheduled to catch seven innings Saturday on his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Round Rock. He went 1 for 2 with a walk Friday in his debut with the Express. Soto has only played in three major league games this season after undergoing right knee surgery in late March. Indians: Outfielder Chris Dickerson missed his second straight game with a sore left knee, but Francona said he will probably be able to play Sunday. Dickerson left Thursdays game when he made an awkward attempt to catch a fly ball that fell for a double. ON DECK Rangers: Right-hander Yu Darvish (10-6) will start the finale of the three-game series on Sunday. Darvishs 1.24 ERA in day games is the second-lowest in the AL, while his 2.90 season ERA ranks ninth. Indians: Right-hander Trevor Bauer (4-5) starts for Cleveland. He faced Texas for the first time in his career on June 6, allowing four earned runs in 6 1-3 innings and taking the loss. The Czechs boasted two of the tournaments most exciting players in forward Vladimir Ruzicka and goaltender Dominik Hasek. Ruzicka set short-lived tournament records with 12 goals and 20 points, while Hasek was named the top goaltender. Led by these two, the Czechs beat everybody except their top rivals - Canada and the Russians - and finished second. The Big Red Machine returned to dominance on home ice, posting a perfect 7-0 record, scoring 50 goals while allowing only 15. Herman Volgin was their top scorer with 14 points, and Ilya Byakin was named the tournaments top defenceman. Canada finished third after a 7-3 loss to the Soviets and a 7-7 draw against the Czechs. The highlight of the tournament for Canada was Mario Lemieuxs four goal outburst in a 13-0 win over Norway. But Lemieux managed just one more goal the rest of the way. Lemieux would not return to the national junior team the following year, though he was eligible. In 1984, he was the top pick in the NHL Entry draft and forged a Hall of Fame career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dave Andreychuk was Canadas top scorer with 6 goals and 11 points. Steve Yzerman made his only career appearance for the national junior team, and scored five points. The following spring, Yzerman was selected fourth overall in the NHL Entry draft by the Detroit Red Wings. Team Canada teammate Sylvain Turgeon, who had registered four goals and six points in the tournament, was taken second overall by the Hartford Whalers. Rockies manager Walt Weiss was unhappy, too. Weiss addressed the issue in a 15-minute meeting with his pitcher and catcher after the Rockies gave up 14 hits and lost 10-1. De La Rosa lasted only 4 1-3 innings and allowed five runs in his first opening-day start. He drew jeers during the Marlins five-run fifth when he stepped off the rubber several times, and he said he had trouble with Rosarios change in signals made with a runner at second base. "He called a lot of my games last year," De La Rosa said. "Today we probably were not on the same page. I still like him. Thats all I can say." Weiss said the postgame meeting helped. "There were some miscommunications," he said. "Weve got to get it straightened out." Jose Fernandez struck out nine and allowed one run in six innings, and Marlins newcomer Casey McGehee drove in four runs with two doubles. The sellout crowd of 37,116 was the largest for the attendance-challenged Marlins since their new ballpark opened two years ago. The 21-year-old Fernandez earned the victory while becoming the youngest NL opening-day starter since Dwight Gooden in 1986, according to STATS. And he picked up where he left off last season, when he went 12-6 and was voted NL Rookie of the Year. "I didnt know how I was going to react to opening day," he said. "But it came out great." Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies in the sixth. "Hes going to have a monster year," Weiss said. But by the time Gonzalez connected, the Rockies trailed 6-0. Even he tipped his cap to Fernandez. "When a guy like that is pitching, you exppect that kind of game," Gonzalez said.dddddddddddd "Hes one of the best." The Rockies, who began their first season since 1996 without retired first baseman Todd Helton, could have used his pop. His replacement, Justin Morneau, went 1 for 4. Michael Cuddyer, who won the NL batting title in 2013, went 2 for 4. Fernandezs strikeout total matched Josh Becketts team record for an opener. Fernandez threw 73 strikes and only 21 balls to 23 batters. The crowd included Fernandezs grandmother Olga, who lives in Cuba. She saw him pitch for the first time since he left that country at age 15. Her grandson improved to 10-0 in 16 career starts at Marlins Park with an ERA of 1.21. "She told me, Good pitching. Youve got to throw a lot more strikes, though," Fernandez said. He threw plenty, given his improved run support. The Marlins, who finished last in the majors in most offensive categories last year, totalled 14 hits while scoring in double figures, something they did only four times in 2013. Marcell Ozuna homered, doubled, singled and scored twice. Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI infield single and a run-scoring double. Adeiny Hechavarria singled three times and drove in a run. NOTES: Marlins INF Rafael Furcal, who began the season on the DL with a strained left hamstring, said he expects to play five or six games on a rehabilitation assignment. The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without the services of Tyler Bozak for a lot longer than anticipated, as the club has placed him on the long-term injured reserve list. As per the National Hockey Leagues collective bargaining agreement, Bozak must remain there for a minimum of 10 games or 24 days. The move is able to give the Maple Leafs some financial flexibility to move above the upper limit of this years salary cap and allow them to move players between the NHL club and the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, but long-term injury may not provide full relief of the players cap hit. Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said Thursday that Bozak is sidelined for, "an extended period of time" with an oblique strain and the club initially placed him on injured reserve. Bozak also missed 12 games earlier this season with a hamstring injury. Buccaneers Jerseys . PHILADELPHIA -- Another gem by Phillies starter Cole Hamels was nearly wasted again. Darin Ruf hit a solo homer in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 victory Sunday and three-game sweep over the Atlanta Braves. "It was a good sign for Darin to go right-centre like that," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He seems to get a lot of pitches away. Its a good sign he stayed on that one, and it was a big moment. Thats what he needs to continue to do." Hamels (7-13) made just two mistakes Sunday -- two long homers off the bat of Evan Gattis -- and they nearly cost him the win. Gattis first home run, in the second inning, travelled 480 feet to centre field. In the seventh, he tied the game with a long ball that went deep into the left-field bleachers. It was his first career multi-homer game. "Hes strong," Hamels said. "He swung with everything he had in him. I felt like I was throwing a golf ball out there and he had a driver." They were the only two hits Hamels allowed over eight innings. He struck out nine, walked two and retired the side in order four times. "He was outstanding," Sandberg said. "Its about time he got a late-inning run to get the W." Gattis almost had another home run in the fifth inning, but it died at the warning track in dead centre field with a strong wind blowing in. "I guess if the 50 mile-an-hour winds didnt keep it in play, it definitely wouldve went off the wall," Hamels said. "Or through it." B.J. Rosenberg earned his first career save with a perfect ninth inning. "He took it and ran with it," Sandberg said. "He earned the spot there today, came through big time with great stuff, pounded the strike zone with strikes." David Carpenter (3-1) took the loss for allowing Rufs homer in the eighth. Chase Utley doubled and Ruf singled to knock in the Phillies first two runs in the first inning. Utley and Ruf both finished with two hits apiece. Braves starter Paul Maholm went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out five and stranded seven Phillies baserunners. "He gave us a great opportunity to win the game," Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We only had two hits. We didnt do much offensively to the whole series." Two baserunning blunders by Cesar Hernandez may have cost the Phillies extra runs. He was picked off in the first inning and thrown out by Joey Terdoslavich attempting to go first to third in the fifth inning. Philadelphia squandered a chance for more runs in the sixth. After the first two men reached base via a walk and an error, Freddy Galvis grounded into a double play and Hamels struck out. B.J. Upton, who went 0 for 4, finished the series 0 for 12 with seven strikeouts. B.J. and Justin Upton are hitless in their last 32 at-bats combined. "They pitched well all three games," B.J. Upton said. "We were in all three games, it just didnt work out. ... Were fine. Well come back to play tomorrow." The Braves had just 10 hits in the series. The Phillies are 11-2 in their last 13 one-run games. "Its great to just play well in all facets of the game, pitching, defence, swinging the bats well this series too," Ruf said. "It was nice just to see what we can do when all phases of the game are clicking for us." The Hawks have won 26 of their last 28 games overall and are two games away from matching the longest winning streak in franchise history. The 1993-94 team won 14 in a row. Pau Gasol tallied 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Derrick Rose provided 23 points, 10 helpers and eight boards for Chicago, which has dropped five of its last seven games. After Nikola Mirotic sunk a pair of foul shots to stake the Bulls to a 21-16 advantage late in the first quaarter, the Hawks went on a 15-6 run that bled into the second.dddddddddddd Mike Scott nailed a 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer to jumpstart the surge and a Korver triple preceded a Paul Millsap layup to cap it and give Atlanta a 36-22 margin at the 7:30 mark of the second. The Hawks were up 48-39 at the break and 76-67 after three. Taj Gibsons dunk pulled Chicago within 76-69 early in the fourth, but a Korver four-point play increased the cushion to 80-69 and the Bulls never got within less than five the rest of the way. Rose drove in for a reverse to claw the Bulls within 93-88 with 4:25 to play, but Horford hit a jumper and two Millsap foul shots gave Atlanta a 97-88 spread with 3:29 to go. The Hawks cruised to the victory from there. Game Notes Atlantas 26-2 mark over its last 28 games is the best extended stretch in the NBA since the Miami Heat won 27 straight two seasons ago ... The Chicago Blackhawks filled their hole at second-line centre by securing the services of a veteran at a cut-rate price. Numbers Game looks at the Blackhawks signing Brad Richards. The Blackhawks Get: C Brad Richards. Richards, 34, has been a productive scorer throughout his career, but that productivity has waned as he approaches his mid-thirties. While he finished with a respectable 51 points in 82 games last season, that 0.62 points per game represented a career low and the second-lowest rate of his career was in 2012-2013, when he had 0.74 points per game. The downward trend is pretty clear at this point. He played 18:40 per game last season, his lowest average time on ice since his rookie season in 2000-2001. Given the massive contract that Richards had with the New York Rangers (nine years, $60-million), and the new recapture penalties that were imposed in the latest collective bargaining agreement, the Rangers had little choice but to buy out Richards, after paying him $33-million for the first three years of his deal. A long and productive career leaves Richards with few needs financially, so he went into his newfound free agency looking for a good fit and settled on joining the Blackhawks, a Stanley Cup contender who could use an upgrade at their second-line centre spot. In the past couple years, even as his point production has started to fall, Richards has had his zone starts tilted towards the offensive zone, with more than 65% of his shifts starting in the offensive zone. As a result, hes had strong possession stats, which may be enough to suggest that, even in decline, in a sheltered role, Richards would be an upgrade on Michal Handzus as Chicagos number two centre. In Chicago, there is a good opportunity for Richards to have a productive year. Any combination of the Blackhawks top scoring wingers includes Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad, so playing with two of them ought to give Richards a chance to have decent even-strength production. Whether Richards can match last seasons scoring totals, however, probably will have some dependence on power play production and, over the past couple seasons, Richards has really struggled to produce with the man advantage. Furthermore, Richards presence likely means that top Blackhawks prospect Teuvo Teravainen wont be starting the season in Chicago and that may be fine for his overall development, but if Teravainen shows that hes ready, it would be easy enough to see Richards bumped down the depth chart, as has happened from time to time with the Rangers over the past couple seasons. There is a benefit to the contract that Richards signed with Chicago -- a one-year, $2-million deal -- in that his declining production in New York was frequently contrasted with how much money the Rangers had tied up to get him. Now, Richards is a bargain signing and if he gives Chicago decent second-line production, he would bring a positive return on investment.
