Rio -- Barely a minute into this interview, Jitu Rai starts to apologise. It has not been long since he finished 12th and missed out on a spot in the eight-man final of the 50m Air Pistol. He is agonising from within, in desperate search for a way to banish the pain from his system. If it takes an apology via a complete stranger to people on the outside with little understanding of his craft, dedication and drive, then so be it.On a miserable, dreary Rio day spitting with rain, Jitu begins the 50m Air Pistol as a strong contender for a medal. Forty-one men start the competition, but 28-year old Jitu is among the most pedigreed in the field with a CV littered with medals at multi-discipline games and World level competitions.Unlike rifle shooting, there are no decimal points in the qualifying round of the 50m pistol. Each competitor gets six series of 10 shots to complete in 90 minutes. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The world record of 583 is held by South Korean Jin Jongoh. He would only shoot 567 on the day but it would be enough for him to qualify at the top of the leaderboard for the final. Not much later, he won gold.Jitu begins with a 92. He ups the ante in series two with a 95. His next three scores are 90, 94 and 95. He is in beast mode now, charging towards the final. As the final series starts with 11 minutes still left on the clock, Jitu is seemingly unstoppable. He is up to fourth. And then, with quite a few of the other leading contenders having finished their series already and ensured qualification, the elements take a turn for the worse. Conditions get trickier as the winds pick up and those still on the range are confronted with a stern challenge. Five shots remain in the qualifier for Jitu and it is here that it all goes pear shaped. His sixth shot is an 8. Seventh -8. Eighth- 9. Ninth- 7. This is the killer blow. The first five shots in the series have delivered 46 points. The next four just 32. He finishes with a perfect 10 but the damage is done. The series ends at 88, by far his worst of the day.It leaves him with a cumulative score of 554. Three men qualify for the final on 556. The two eights wreck the ship, the seven sinks it. And yet, Jitu tells me later that when it left the gun, the seven felt like the perfect shot. Perhaps on its way to the target, the pellet was caught by a gust of wind and veered off course? Perhaps Jitu misjudged its path? Perhaps is often the difference between glory and despair.Outcomes such as this are perfect fodder for observers around the place to indulge in a bit of pop-psychology. So why does a guy who arrived at this competition in red-hot form that included a gold in the same category at a World Cup in Bangkok earlier in the year, falter at this point?Surely the stage played its part? Did the thought that he was at an Olympics muddle his mind and tense up his fingers? Was this a classic Olympic meltdown with the finish line in plain sight? I put some of that theorising to Jitu and he rubbishes it with an endearingly simple explanation.I was not under any pressure at all, he insists. Olympics is just a name. I have won medals at World Cups, Commonwealth & Asian games. The target is the same, the pistol is the same and the ammunition is the same, so why shall I think of the Olympics as anything bigger than any other competition? The athletes I compete against are the same so why should I be scared? There was no pressure, I was here to try and give my best performance ever and win a medal for the country. However, I could not accomplish that. The history books will record that Jitu Rai left his first Olympics empty handed. Yes, a medal remained elusive, but in the both events Jitu participated in he left an indelible mark. In the 10m Air Pistol earlier in the week, he recovered from a stumbly start to book a place in the final. He was the first of the eight men to be eliminated then but he was in an elite group of shooters contending for a medal. On Wednesday, he tripped up with a finals spot there for the taking. He may have faltered but he definitely did not fail.A lot of people were hoping that I will deliver a medal, but I couldnt and that makes me want to apologise, he said.I will continue to improve, there are other events coming up like World Cup finals and I will surely produce better results. This has been an invaluable experience and I am sure I can continue to go forward. There is no reason to say sorry, Jitu. Not one. Ecco Collin Leather Slip On . Zvonareva, who won the tournament in 2009 and 10, couldnt handle her opponents big groundstrokes in only her third event back after 17 months out with a shoulder injury. Zvonareva made her comeback in January in Shenzhen and played in the Australian Open but lost her first matches at both tournaments. Ecco Mens Sandals Clearance . Defencemen Drew Doughty, Shea Weber and forward Ryan Getzlaf also scored for the Canadians, who started their gold-medal defence 2-0. Goalie Roberto Luongo, getting the call in place of Game 1 starter Carey Price, was solid when needed in making 23 saves for the shutout. Ecco Mens Boots Sale . Takahashi, who had a 10-point lead after the short program, received 268.31 points after the free skate to finish 15 points ahead of second-place Nobunari Oda. Ecco Intrinsic Sandal Mens . After Gasquet beat fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia 7-5, 6-3, Tsonga followed up with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 win against sixth-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin in an all-French match. CARDIFF, Wales -- Wales woke up on Saturday morning targeting the worlds top four, and with revenge against Australia very much on their collective mind.On arriving at the Principality Stadium, fans were implored to cheer on the team as red flags emblazoned with the word TRY were left dotted around the ground. But, while some fantastic attacking rugby did follow before those same supporters filed out into the Cardiff evening, it was played almost exclusively by players wearing gold. The Wallabies frenetic first-half assault on the Welsh line - which could have yielded a far greater margin of victory than the 32-8 final score - secured Australias 12th successive win in this fixture and only highlighted just how far Wales currently are from achieving their goal. The score shows we struggled a little bit in defence in the first half, Ross Moriarty admitted afterwards. You could obviously tell they had been together for a long time, on the back of the [Rugby] Championship. You could see how experienced and well-drilled they were. The Gloucester back-rower added: Obviously it was quick and its not comfortable when youre a forward coming out of the scrum and theyre making quite a decent gain off the first phase.Of course, there were mitigating factors. Interim head coach Rob Howley was already without Sam Warburton, Alun Wyn Jones and Taulupe Faletau when Jonathan Davies withdrew with a tight hamstring hours before kick-off.Scott Williams introduction from outside of the match-day squad would have disrupted defensive systems in a team that already featured Moriarty playing out of position at No. 8.But that does not completely explain how a side that not too long ago prided itself on its defence has shipped 26 tries in their last five Test matches. At times it looked as though the Wallabies were playing a different game to their hosts, as a sparsely populated Principality Stadium was subdued by the running lines of Bernard Foley, Tevita Kuridrani and Israel Folau.Australia were able to carve through the Welsh defence with such alarming ease that it was a surprise that the hosts were able to hold out when Dan Biggar went into the bin for 10 minutes. They were cutting us quite well in the backs, Moriarty conceded. A bit of composure in our defence and I think we would have been alright.dddddddddddd.The veracity of Australias start in Cardiff also hinted at another factor in their one-sided win - preparation time. Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika has been able to fine tune his squad following a series against England and a full Rugby Championship campaign.Australia might not have fared well in either but the time the squad has spent together, and the work it has done on the training pitch, will have been invaluable. By contrast, Howleys squad had less than a fortnight to pick up where they left off in New Zealand, in June.We always knew the challenges of coming in with such a short preparation and the Welsh probably faced that [on Saturday], Wallabies fly-half Bernard Foley said. Its tough when you get everyone back from their club sides and have a week to prepare.Test match footy is something totally different to your provincial and club competitions. It goes up a notch and you only have to be off by little margins and you lose Test matches. But as Howley prepares Wales to face Argentina next Saturday, it is not all doom and gloom. Warburton played 80 minutes for Cardiff Blues against Treviso on Friday night, suggesting a recall might not be far away, while Faletau was moving spritely as he left the Principality Stadium. Moreover, replacement Hallam Amos provided an electric cameo against Australia that threatened to inspire an improbable fightback. The Newport Gwent Dragons wing provided a much needed spark when he came on for George North, engineering the move that ended with Williams try and almost dotting down himself.Amos provides Howley -- and ultimately Warren Gatland -- with an alternative to the brute force of North and Alex Cuthbert. Wales have needed such subtlety since Shane Williams sidestepped into retirement. The problem for Howley, though, is that with Rhys Webb potentially providing another injury headache, Argentina lie in wait next Saturday and not Japan. The Pumas are not an opponent you want to face when feeling anything other than 100 percent. Experimentation might have to wait.
