PITTSBURGH -- Look who has the best record in the major leagues. Gerrit Cole overcame a rocky start to become the first Pirates pitcher to win his first four career starts in more than a century and the Pirates won their seventh straight, 10-3 over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Pirates moved a game up in the NL Central when the St. Louis Cardinals lost later at Oakland. At 49-30, Pittsburgh has the best record in baseball. Cole (4-0) gave up three runs in the first inning but no more as he made it through six innings, allowing eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Nick Maddox started 4-0 in his first four starts in 1907. "Its really a team effort," Cole said. "Ive pitched pretty well but Ive gotten a lot of support defensively and our offence has been very opportunistic. It feels good to say Im 4-0 but it feels even better because the team is playing well." The Pirates are on their longest winning streak since running off 10 in a row in 2004. The Pirates havent had a winning season since 1992 and the 20-year stretch of futility is the longest in major North American professional team sports history. However, they are not getting caught up in being in the rarified air of being 19 games over .500 in June. "Were just focused on winning that day," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Our guys our very focused on taking it pitch to pitch." Johnny Hellweg (0-1) failed to get out of the second inning in his major league debut, giving up seven runs -- five earned -- in 1 2-3 innings. "He didnt come out with very good stuff," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "He was trying to aim the ball instead of throw it. That happens a lot of times when its a guys first time out." Starling Marte had a double and triple among his three hits, and just missed a homer in the eighth when he flied out to deep centre field. McCutchen had three hits, including his ninth home run, and three RBIs for Pittsburgh. Pedro Alvarez added two hits and Neil Walker hit a two-run double to start a seven-run second inning in which the Pirates sent 12 batters to the plate. Alvarez extended his hitting streak to 11 games Ryan Reid pitched three scoreless innings for his first career save. He was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 3 after spending seven seasons in the minor leagues. "Its really nice to get a save but its even better to help the team win," said Reid, who has a 1.00 ERA in six games. "I feel good about being able to come up here and help the team keep winning." Carlos Gomez, who missed the previous three games with a sprained right shoulder, had two hits for the Brewers. Jean Segura and Juan Francisco also had two hits apiece. Rickie Weeks ran his hitting streak to 13 games. Walkers double got the Pirates to 3-2, scoring Garrett Jones and Alvarez, who led off with singles. The Pirates then loaded the bases as Hellweg walked Travis Snider and Cole around a groundout by Jordy Mercer. Marte then singled home Walker with the tying run. The Pirates went ahead when Russell Martin followed by hitting a grounder up the middle that Segura, the shortstop, misplayed for an error, allowing Snider and Cole to score. McCutchen and Alvarez followed with RBI singles to knock the 6-foot-9 Hellweg from the game. "We had some trouble with (Hellweg) in the first inning," McCutchen said. "Hes so big and he was throwing sinkers from a downhill angle at a time when there still were shadows on the field. Then we got adjusted to him." Milwaukee acquired Hellweg and Segura, who leads the National League with 104 hits, last July from the Los Angeles Angles in a trade for ace pitcher Zack Greinke. Hellweg was 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Nashville this season. "I wanted to have a good pace, I thought that was important in my first game, but I really started rushing things, especially in that second inning," Hellweg said. The Brewers jumped on Cole for three quick runs. A walk to Norichika Aoki and singles by Segura and Gomez loaded the bases and Aramis Ramirez walked to force in a run. A second run scored when Jonathan Lucroy grounded into a double play and Francisco capped the inning with an RBI single. However, the 3-0 lead held up only for one inning, and the Pirates added on runs following their seven-run second. Marte hit an RBI double in the third and tripled in the sixth and scored on McCutchens double. McCutchen homered off Michael Gonzalez in the eighth. "I was on the ropes and the pitch count was getting up there in that first inning but I got some groundballs in the second, guys made some really good plays behind and that settled me down," Cole said. They realize they have no choice if theyre going to stay in first place in the NL West. On Sunday, they got a start at finding a groove again. Paul Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly and a double against All-Star Madison Bumgarner, Cody Ross added a late two-run single, and the first-place D-backs held off the San Francisco Giants for a 3-1 win to avoid a three-game sweep. "It wasnt a very good game on our part at all," Ross said. "We made some mental mistakes. Were a better ballclub than that, but we overcame that. This isnt the short road trip we wanted." The D-backs snapped a three-game losing streak with their first victory of the second half, holding onto a slim half-game lead over the Dodgers. Randall Delgado (2-3) won in his first career start at AT&T Park, and Goldschmidts first-inning sac fly got things going against the inconsistent defending World Series champions. Arizona shortstop Cliff Pennington threw out Buster Posey at the plate in the sixth on a pretty relay throw, and third-base coach Tim Flannery claimed responsibility for the loss for sending the reigning NL MVP. "I feel terrible and responsible for not getting Bum the win," Flannery said. "With nobody out, that cant happen." A day after stranding 13 baserunners and going 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position, the D-backs did just enough against Bumgarner in the 10-game winners first outing after the All-Star break. Ross singled in the eighth as Arizona won for just the fourth time in 16 road games. The D-backs bounced back in the series finale to avoid their second sweep of the season against the Giants and first in San Franciscos waterfront ballpark since May 10-12, 2011. "We lost the first two games here. You want to stop that as soon as possible," Ross said. "Delgado was a stopper today." Goldschmidt, 1 for 9 in the first two games of the series, doubled to start the fourth and drew walks in the sixth and eighth innings. Delgado allowed three hits, struck out two and walked four in 5 2-3 innings. Brad Ziegler finished a crazy ninth that featured two errors for his fourth save in as many tries. The Giants scored on second baseman Aaron Hills wild throw past first. "Were in it for the long haul," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "We understand there are going to be a lot of frustrations along the way and we need to play better.dddddddddddd Were capable of playing better, cleaner baseball." San Francisco took the first two games of the series, but the NL West-leading Diamondbacks (51-17) gained a game back to give themselves a 5 1/2-game cushion over San Francisco and remain a half-game ahead of second-place Los Angeles. Bumgarner (10-6), who didnt pitch for NL All-Star manager Bruce Bochy in Tuesdays loss at Citi Field, had his three-start winning streak snapped with just his second loss in eight starts. He allowed five hits, struck out six and walked three over seven innings in his 20th start of 2013. "He threw the ball well. He battled through some innings," Posey said. "Its tough when you cant pick up a good outing like that." The Giants turned a nifty double play to end the fifth. First baseman Brandon Belt caught A.J. Pollocks foul popup and threw to Bumgarner covering first for a double play. A running Pennington, aboard on a leadoff single, was faked out at second when Marco Scutaro threw down his glove as if to tag Pennington -- with Pennington realizing too late that the ball wasnt there as he made his slide. Arizona was swept in a three-game series the previous two times it opened the second half on the road, at Wrigley Field against the Cubs last year and at San Diego in 2010. "Today we were back to normal," third baseman Martin Prado said. "Not just because we won but the environment. Everyone was sticking together. From now on, were going to get back to the baseball we were playing in the first half." Notes: SS Brandon Crawford returned to the Giants starting lineup after coming off the bench Saturday, a day after he had his left foot spiked by Heath Bell on a play at first base. ... Bumgarner lost for just the third time in 13 starts vs. the NL West. ... On Aug. 16, 2011, against the Giants in his second big league start while with Atlanta, Delgado carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before now-Arizona teammate Ross solo home run. ... The Giants placed LHP Jeremy Affeldt on the DL a day after he strained his left groin. He could miss up to six weeks. RHP Jean Machi was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to fill his spot. ... San Francisco RHP Ryan Vogelsong, recovering from two broken bones in his right pinkie, will pitch his first rehab outing in the Arizona Rookie League on Tuesday -- likely two innings and about 35 pitches. ...
