STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi States defense was supposed to be one of the teams strengths this season.Instead, its ranged from a mild disappointment to a downright disaster and its a big reason Mississippi State enters Saturdays Egg Bowl against Ole Miss in a tie with their in-state rival for last place in the SECs Western Division. The last two weeks have been particularly ugly: The Bulldogs have given up a combined 109 points and 1,276 yards in losses to Alabama and Arkansas, including last weekends 58-42 setback to the Razorbacks .Mississippi State gave up a season-high 661 total yards against Arkansas. Rawleigh Williams ran for a career-high 205 yards and four touchdowns while Austin Allen threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns for the Razorbacks, who moved up and down the field without much resistance.Coach Dan Mullen said the game tape was predictably gruesome. There were a lot of issues everywhere, Mullen said. We didnt fit right, missed alignments, poor communication and missed tackles. Not a very good performance. The continued problems for Mississippi States defense are surprising, especially considering seven seniors are listed as starters. Veterans like linebacker Richie Brown and defensive linemen A.J. Jefferson were part of the Bulldog teams that had so much success in 2014 and 15, but new defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon hasnt been able to parlay that experience into good results this fall. The Bulldogs (4-7, 2-5 SEC) have one more chance to get it right on Saturday when they travel to face the Rebels (5-6, 2-5) in Oxford, Mississippi.Ole Miss has had one of best offenses in the league for most of the season, but it hasnt been quite as prolific over the past few weeks since freshman Shea Patterson took over for injured senior Chad Kelly. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Patterson will be making his third career start. Hes had some good moments in his first two starts -- which included a win over Texas A&M and a loss to Vanderbilt -- but is completing just 53.6 percent of his passes. Thats well below Kellys 62.5 percent mark before the injury.Mississippi States goal is to make Patterson uncomfortable in the pocket. Bulldogs safety Brandon Bryant said complete concentration will be needed for the entire 60 minutes on Saturday. It is a very big game and we have to go hard all week in practice and take it day by day, Bryant said. Then on Saturday we have to impose our will on them.Mississippi State is giving up 34.3 points per game this season, which ranks last in the 14-team SEC. Ole Miss isnt much better, giving up 32.1 points per game to rank 12th.Considering Mississippi State has a productive offense led by quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, its fair to expect the Bulldogs to score some points on Saturday. So if the Bulldogs can get a few stops or turnovers, it might be enough for the win.We have to go out and execute and have fun, Mississippi State linebacker Dez Harris said. We cant worry about the scoreboard or what people think. We have to play our game and do what we have to do to win.-----More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 .Fake Nike Air Vapormax . -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks was fined $15,570 by the NFL on Wednesday for his hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees last Sunday. We know he and his family have been dealing with this throughout the season. Right now, there are things that are so much more important to baseball. Then on Sunday afternoon, the Padres took a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies and absorbed a three-game sweep at Coors Field.Solarte is away from the team. Catcher Derek Norris is day-to-day with an injured finger, and the Padres are playing without a right-handed-hitting outfielder. General manager A.J. Preller starts his 30-day, Major League Baseball-mandated suspension Monday. And any help that might be coming from El Paso is another three days away because the Chihuahuas are headed to Tuesday nights Triple-A Championship Game against International League champion Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees) after winning the Pacific Coast League championship Saturday night. On Monday night, the ailing Padres open a 10-game homestand. As if they need a reminder of how tough this season has been, the Padres (62-87) open the homestand with three games against Arizona (63-86). Over the last two weeks of the season, the Padres and Diamondbacks will play six times essentially to see who finishes last in the National League West and possibly enters the offseason with the second-worst record in the National League. Not that matters are much better for the Diamondbacks. While Green seems secure in his job, Arizona manager Chip Hale, his former boss, is one of several Diamondbacks leaders who could be two weeks away from the unemployment line.ddddddddddddMatters are that dire in the southwest corner of the United States. The matchup Monday will see Arizona right-hander Braden Shipley (4-3, 5.56 ERA) oppose left-hander Clayton Richard (2-3, 3.00 ERA). Richard is 2-2 with a 1.70 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) since returning to the Padres in August as a free agent.Richards return to San Diego is easily explained. One, Clayton and Ashley Richard enjoy living in San Diego. Two, as Clayton says, The Padres promised me a chance to start.Shipley, 24, the Diamondbacks first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2013 draft, will be making his ninth start -- and second at Petco Park -- after two straight appearances out of the Arizona bullpen. Its different, Shipley said of the second and third relief outings in his 91-appearance professional career. As pitchers, were so routine oriented that my whole pregame ritual was thrown off a bit.Shipley picked up his fourth win of his rookie season as a reliever against the Rockies on Wednesday, although he allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings. In fact, his ERA in two relief appearances is 9.39.He made one previous start against the Padres on Aug. 21 in San Diego and took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits -- including homers to left-handed-hitting outfielders Travis Jankowski and Alex Dickerson -- in 5 1/3 innings.Richard absorbed the loss the previous day when he made a pair of throwing errors that led to two unearned runs -- the only runs he allowed over six innings in a 2-1 loss. In four starts since, Richard is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA -- and the Padres are 4-0. ' ' '

Liam Sutcliffe insists the Leeds players are raring to go as they look to arrest their alarming slump when in-form Hull visit Headingley on Friday night. The Super League champions are second from bottom after winning just two of their first 10 matches and their last three defeats have been at the hands of last years bottom four teams.Sutcliffe, one of only three players to have started every match so far as injuries continue to devastate Brian McDermotts squad, says there were signs in last Saturdays 14-10 defeat at a much-improved Salford that the Rhinos are close to turning the corner. It was very disappointing to lose again but there were many positives, especially from where weve been at the last couple of weeks, Sutcliffe said. Were not panicking. We know were not in a great position but everyone is still confident in the teams ability and what we can do.You cant dwell too much on the past because it wont do you any good. You beat yourself up at the weekend but, come Monday morning, everyone is ready and raring to go again. It will come good. Returning star Robert Lui inspired Salford City Red Devils to a 14-10 win over fading Super League champions Leeds Rhinos The 21-year-old Sutcliffe was earmarked as their heir-apparent to Kevin Sinfield but, after making his comeback from a seven-month absence with a knee injury in the opening game of the season, admits things have not gone to plan.He found himself pushed out to the threequarters for the last two games after Ryan Hall, Tom Briscoe and Joel Moon joined the clubs injury list but will be back at stand-off against Hull following skipper Danny McGuires return to the sidelines with a quad problem.I was really looking forward to lining up with Danny McGuire this year, Sutcliffe said. Getting injured in the first game didnt help, plus I was trying to get back into the swing of things.Theres a whole bunch of things thats not gone right, personally and team wise, but hopefully we can pick up.Leeds have won their last nine home meetings with Hull, whose last win at Headingley was in September, 2007, but Lee Radfords men are riding high and aiming for a sixth successive win. However, they will still be without the injured Gareth Ellis and Mark Minichiello, while Carlos Tuimavave is also out after suffering a groin injury in last weeks warm-up. Hull FC are looking to claim six wins on the bounce on Friday night at Leeds Leeds Rhinos squad: Hardaker, Watkins, Burrow, Galloway, Falloon, Jones-Buchanan, Ablett, Sutcliffe, Delaney, Singleton, Garbutt, Keinhorst, Achurch, Mullally, Handley, Golding, Baldwinson, Lilley, Smith.Hull FC squad: Bowden, Fonua, Green, Hadley, Houghton, Manu, Michaels, Naughton, Paleaaesina, Pritchard, Pryce, Shaul, Sneyd, Talanoa, Taylor, Thompson, Watts, Washbrook, Yeaman.Watch Leeds v Hull FC from 7.30pm on Friday on Sky Sports 2. VANCOUVER -- Hassoun Camaras mistakes were starting to pile up. But he made amends for them -- and enabled the Montreal Impact to make history at the same time. Montreal won the Amway Canadian soccer championship Wednesday night as Camaras goal in the 84th minute gave the Impact a 2-2 tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Camara emerged as the hero after he had a goal disallowed and took a yellow card in the first half, and could not stop Daigo Kobayashis goal that gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute. "I had to keep going," said Camara, a 29-year-old French defender. "I knew that I would have a second chance (to score) -- for sure." Camara tied the game 2-2 as he headed in a Justin Mapp corner kick. Although the two-game, aggregate goal series was also a 2-2 draw, the Impact claimed the crown because its two away goals served as the tiebreaker. The Major League Soccer rivals played to a 0-0 tie in the first leg in Montreal. "We are very proud and very happy to have a chance to bring this (Voyageurs Cup) in Montreal," said Camara. The Impact earned a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League, starting in August, which determines qualifiers for the 2014 Club World Cup. Montreal won the Canadian championship for the first time since playing in a lower-tier circuit in 2008. Felipe also scored for the Impact, who trailed 1-0 after the first half. "They never give up," Montreal coach Marco Schallibaum said of his players. "They have a lot of energy, and we know we can always score at any time." Camilo had the other goal for the Whitecaps, who finished runner-up to Toronto FC in the previous four tournaments. Camaras decisive goal came moments after Whitecaps defender Andy OBrien made what briefly appeared to be a game-saving play. He blocked a Marco Di Vaio shot from inside the Vancouver box, setting up the corner kick. "A lapse in marking and a defending breakdown, thats the way the game goes sometimes," said Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton. "Its just very frustrating." The Caps were disappointed again after enjoying an 11-4 shots advantage in the first half before taking nine more attempts in the second half for an overall 20-11 edge. "We managed to give them a chance there, and they finished it away," said Knighton. "Theyre pretty lethal in and around the box and they take advantage of their chances when they come. I just think we need to be more clinical at the end." The Whitecaps entered the game with an unbeaten home record in all competitions. But despite dominating in thhe first half while enjoying several scoring chances, the hosts could not triumph before a raucous crowd at B.ddddddddddddC. Place Stadium. Camilo got Vancouvers offence going right off the opening kick-off as he raced towards a loose ball in the Montreal box and forced Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush to charge out of his net and make a save. In the fourth minute, Camilo lofted home a curling free kick from about 35 yards to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead, igniting the crowd. The goal came after he was fouled by Alessandro Nesta. Camilo was in the process of creating another scoring chance as he raced down the left flank in the sixth minute, but he was pulled from behind by Camara, resulting in the Montreal defenders yellow card. "It was very hard for me to deal with that because I knew that, after the next foul, I could take a red card," said Camara. "It was very hard for me to defend like I usually do, so I had to be smart. "But I think I did well, and Im very proud of the job I did today, and the job the team did -- because we deserve (the championship), I think." Montreal started the second half strong and tied the game 1-1 in the 49th minute as Felipe put in a shot from just outside the Vancouver box, forcing the Whitecaps to press for a win because of the away-goal tiebreaker rule. Kobayashi, who saw his first action since suffering an ankle injury May 11 against New York, gave the Whitecaps the lead in the 69th minute. He had placed fellow midfielder Gershon Koffie, who was carried off the field on a stretcher after a hard tackle. A team spokesman said he suffered a right quad strain. Kobayashi booted in a loose ball after he collided with Camara while trying to head in a Nigel Reo-Coker cross. The ball came loose and Kobayashi quickly broke away from the fallen Camara and booted it in. But Camara, determined to keep his chin up, had the last laugh -- and his mistakes were all but forgotten. Notes: Scottish striker Kenny Miller returned to the Vancouver lineup after being out since March 30 with a hamstring injury. He played 73 minutes before being replaced by Harvey, who served as a midfielder as Vancouver adjusted its formation. ... Whitecaps defender Brad Rusin sat out with a calf injury suffered in practice Monday. He is expected to miss two weeks. ... Vancouver striker Darren Mattocks played the final eight minutes in place of Camilo. Mattocks rejoined the team temporarily after being with the Jamaican national team in preparation for World Cup qualifiers. He will miss the Whitecaps next two MLS games, at New York and Seattle. ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals are both looking to steady the ship going into a four-game series that opens Thursday night at Globe Life Park. The American League West-leading Rangers (58-44) have seen what was once a 10-game division lead dwindle to 2 1/2 games thanks to a 7-17 stretch. The defending World Series champion Royals (49-51) are in fourth place in the AL Central. The pitching matchup in the opener is a repeat of last Saturdays duel in Kansas City, which the Rangers won 7-4. Texas would love to get a repeat performance out of ace Cole Hamels, who picked up the win after allowing one run (none earned) and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The 32-year-old lefty, 11-2 with a 2.87 ERA, is among the league leaders in several major categories, including wins, ERA and strikeouts.Hamels is facing Yordano Ventura (6-8, 4.99 ERA) again. The right-hander set down the first nine hitters he faced before a walk and a two-run homer by Jurickson Profar started the fourth. Ventura took the loss after being charged with three runs and three hits in five innings with four walks and five strikeouts.Hamels owns the last three and five of the last six wins by a Texas starting pitcher. Thats why the Rangers made the first of what could be several trades to upgrade the pitching staff with Wednesdays deal to land starter Lucas Harrell and reliever Dario Alvarez from Atlanta. You look at both pitchers we acquired, they can help our ballclub, fill a role and add depth, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. With Lucas, he is a guy who is throwing the ball well. He has been around a little bit, had some experience and he has been on a little bit of a roll.Harrell, 31, fills an immediate need in the rotation, with his turn coming up Sunday against the Royals. Harrell has gone 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Braves this season. He has the capability of keeping us in the ballgame, manager Jeff Banister said.Alvarez is a hard-throwing lefty with 3.00 ERA with 28 strikeouts and five walks in 15 innings. He has held opponents to a .200 batting average. The Rangers did give up highly-regarded power prospect Travis Demeritte. The 21-year-old infielder was hitting .272 with 25 home runs in 88 games for High-Class A High Desert.Daniels added the Rangers arent necessarily done with the trade deadline looming Monday. While the search for arms tops the list, upgrading other facets of the club could be on the table.I wouldnt rule anything out, Daniels said, but pitching is our priority.Texas took the last two of three last weekend in Kansas City and it 6-4 against the Royals since the start of 2015. The teams split four games in Arlington in 2015, but the Rangers are just 5-7 against Kansas City at Globe Life Park since start of 2012.Royals manager Ned Yost held a team meeting before Wednesdays 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels to try to ease concerns for a club thats fading in the standings and is inundated with trade rumors. The get-together was quick -- Yost said about two minutes -- and to the point. We know what we have ahead of us, weve known the trials that weve been through in the past and weve known that weve had our backs against the wall before, he told MLB.com. You know that you always come out of it. Just go out, enjoy your teammates and play the game like you did when you were 12 years old. Radwanska, making her debut in the Seoul tournament, hit eight aces in a match that lasted 1 hour, 4 minutes at Olympic Park tennis stadium. "It was definitely a very good match -- I was playing really good tennis," Radwanska said.On day three of the series, New Zealand came face to face with the enormity of the task that is playing India in India on turning pitches. Against much better - crucially, much more experienced - spinners, on a track that had become much more difficult than in the first innings, New Zealands batsmen did a lot of things right. In fact, they batted much better than India did in their first innings, and even denied India when they got on their first roll, but they still ended up conceding a 56-run lead, which is good as 150 when you have to bat last on such a pitch. Before that final collapse, for 90 overs, we had a near perfect innings featuring two excellent spinners at the top of their game, bowling in their own conditions against batsmen using every sinew of discipline, technique and awareness to counter them. As it happens in such contests, the errors were few and far between. There was a passive attempt by a batsman here, a freebie on the pads there, but quite a few spells of play deserved to be part of a classic; they were denied that distinction by the eventual 56-run deficit.Martin Guptill defied low expectations by taking a toll on the fast bowlers when the ball was new, and then starting off well against spin. At first, Ravindra Jadeja had long-off back for him, doubting if Guptill could score without going aerial. Guptill waited, took singles, and forced Jadeja to bring the fielder up. Aware that he had to score too because there werent going to be too many scoring opportunities, Guptill went over mid-off immediately. Then the fielder went back, and he started taking singles again. As can often happen, Guptill worked hard against the threatening bowlers, and dropped his guard against pace, which normally serves mainly as relief for the spin bowlers - and the batsmen. Guptill played across the line of an Umesh Yadav delivery and paid the price. The lbw call was touch and go, but would likely have returned an umpires call verdict had DRS been available and called upon.Kane Williamson and Tom Latham then put up a masterclass much like Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay had. They picked the length early, they moved decisively, either well forward or right back, they swept the right lines, and they didnt let Jadeja run through his overs. This should not be confused with what India complained about. India complained about the comfort breaks; this was more about making Jadeja wait till they were ready. While it may not make that much of a difference, it doesnt let Jadeja dictate the pace. The bigger difference was their techniques.India began with in-out fields, looking to see if the batsmen had the patience and the skill to score runs without lofting the ball. They also wanted to keep a lid on the scoring while the partnership was on because they knew on this pitch one could bring many. New Zealand passed that test. Ones and twos kept coming. R Ashwin didnt get to bowl more than six balls in a row at one batsman. There were no traps being laid.On the third morning, the fields changed. Anil Kumble, Indias coach, asked Jadeja and Ashwin to make sure the ball was ending up on the stumps. That is typical Kumble. He made a career out of balls ending up on the stumps. The fields changed too. Singles dried up. Ashwin now bowled 11 straight balls at Latham. He wouldnt need more. The 11th was an offbreak that didnt turn. After all the hard work, Latham, who played for a marginal amount of turn was beaten on the inside edge.Williamson fell to the pitch, a massive offbreak from well outside the off, accompanied by an explosion off the pitch and low bounce. He stayed back, he didnt open the face, but it still spun past his defence. Having lost three wickets in four overs, New Zealand were in danger of conceding a huge lead, but Luke Ronchi and Mitchell Santner were about to arrest the collapse.Ronchi showed enterprise, Santner defence. India threw the bait. Jadeja and Ashwin bowled with no point to Ronchi. At every ball slightly short of driving length, Ronchi would go back, but not go ahead with the cut shot if it wasnt there for the taking. Once he even left an Ashwin offbreak alone after shaping to cut. For the first five overs of the partnership, there was nothing. The batsmen were in the bowlers sights. There were close calls. The pressure - and anticipation of the spinners - was palpable. Then, bowling his eighth straight over of the morning, Ashwin blinked. Ronchi was 8 offf 28, Santner 1 off 18, the partnership 3 off 32.ddddddddddddA slight drop in length was all Ronchi needed, and he was all over it. Ashwins next three overs went for 19. The tide was turning. Indias advantage had come down to 121. Ashwin was taken off. Against Yadav, there were few problems. By the time Ashwin came back, the deficit was down to 111, and there were 36 minutes to go to lunch. This was a crucial 36 minutes. New Zealand had more to lose because India could easily take three wickets in those 36 minutes.Ashwin dropped another ball short. Santner picked up another boundary. Rohit Sharma was tried for an over. He conceded a four too. With the lead under 100, just before the start of the 80th over, Ajinkya Rahane had a word with Jadeja, who went over the wicket to change the angle. Now was the time for the umpire to make an error. As a rule, you dont give lbws for left-arm bowlers to right-hand batsmen unless the ball has turned back or straightened or it is so full there is no time for the angle to take it past the stumps. Ronchi swept, had a stride in, but was given out lbw.Santner continued to concentrate hard and take Ashwin on. The way he hit two boundaries after stepping out to Ashwin was pure class. Down the pitch, not worried about the stumping while he was, right to the pitch of the ball, using his levers not power to chip over mid-off and back over Ashwins head. Just after lunch India made a mistake. Five overs of pace were not just mental relief but offered two free leg-side fours and a third that could have been, and a half-volley that Santner drove beautifully back past the bowler. Not for the first time a New Zealand batsman was looking like he could play a blinder despite the obvious disadvantages they face when playing in India. They were against spinners who were at the top of their game on a pitch that one of them, Jadeja, termed as similar to the underprepared ones he has played all his domestic cricket on. They didnt know which way Jadeja was turning the ball so they had to pick the length early and play him off the pitch. Still, they had come within 67 of Indias first-innings score with five of their wickets standing. This time Ashwin produced the special delivery. Going over the wicket, changing the angle, spinning one big, taking the edge of Santners bat for an extraordinary catch for Wriddhiman Saha. This was a thick edge. Saha had to follow the ball quite quickly. It stuck in the webbing. Another potential classic was nipped in the bud. The fact that so much mental energy was spent and it was still in the bud shows you how difficult it is when these two spinners bowl for almost two sessions and their errors can be counted on your hands. Jadeja then ran through the tail. While you appreciated Indias skill and composure even as New Zealand got closer and closer, you felt a little sorry for New Zealand. They had zero rub of the green. They lost the toss, another umpire might have given Rohit out on 16 fewer than his eventual 35, and Ronchi definitely got a rough one to end a 49-run stand on a pitch where new batsmen found it extremely tough to bat. These are not the things you budget for. You expect to win matches despite losing tosses. You expect to get over an umpiring call here or there. New Zealand certainly werent complaining. These things are not in their control. What was in their control is for every batsman to follow his game plans; that Ross Taylor couldnt will hurt New Zealand the most. He had a platform coming in at 159 for 2, he held the potential of playing around with Indias discipline with his unorthodox sweeps, but he made the biggest error. When you are not picking which way Jadeja is turning the ball, you want to pick the length early and either smother the turn or stay back to adjust. Taylor played passively, stayed on the crease, and was beaten on the inside edge. Batsmen who have followed the series between Sri Lanka and Australia will tell you that you dont want to be beaten on the inside edge.It is a little harsh to single out Taylor based on a two-ball innings, his first in the series, but such is the nature of the beast when you havent had enough acclimatisation to the kind of bowling you are facing and you are having to stretch every sinew to even think of parity with the favourites. CINCINNATI -- Jonathan Lucroy slipped on his shirt, turned around and looked seriously at waiting reporters.Lets get this over with, Milwaukees All-Star catcher said.Lucroy knew hed be asked about his passed ball that allowed Billy Hamilton to dash home with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 1-0 win over the Brewers. The speedy Hamilton drew a two-out walk from Tyler Thornburgh (3-3). Left-hander Will Smith relieved and walked Joey Votto.Hamilton stole third with Jay Bruce hitting, setting up the game-winning play. The curveball glanced off Lucroys glove as Bruce swung and missed and rolled away to the left. The ball didnt even get to the dirt track near the visitors dugout, still far enough away for Hamilton to easily score. It was originally scored as a wild pitch, then changed to a passed ball. The pitchers deserve better, Lucroy said. (Milwaukee starter Zach) Davies deserved better. That cant happen. Thats minor league stuff right there. I shouldve caught it. If its in the air and I get a glove on it, Ive got to catch it.Smith considered the curve particularly tough to handle.I just kind of yanked it away, Smith said. You know Lucroy is an unbelievable catcher. It happens. Thats what speed does. It makes you freak out.Manager Craig Counsell admitted that the Brewers were conceding third base to Hamilton.More bad things can happen trying to throw him out than letting him steal third, Counsell said.Tony Cingrani (2-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.Davies and Cincinnati starter Dan Straily each pitched seven impressive innings.Straily, who was 1-4 over his last five starts, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four. He set down nine straight batters in one stretch and didnt allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth, when Jonathan Villar led off with a walk and stole his major league-leading 33rd base.Villar went to third on catcher Tucker Barnharts throwing error, but Lucroy grounded out to end the threat.Davies, recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game, allowed four hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Four of his strikeouts were called and he coaxed four comebacks, only one hit sharply.Thats a really good example of knowing when Im locating and mixing it up, he said. I know its going right when theyre taking pitches and not getting good swings on balls. The Reds got two hits on his first three pitches, putting runners at first and third, but Davies escaped.Milwaukee put runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth against Michael Lorenzen, but Ryan Braun grounded out.NOT SO FASTReds rookie Jose Peraza was caught stealing second by Lucroy with one out in the second inning. Peraza was 13-for-13 in his brief career going into the game, including 10-for-10 this season.CONSISTENT STREAKERVillar went 0 for 3 to see his hitting streak snapped at seven games, his fourth streak of that length this season. Seven games is his season high.POWER OUTAGEReds pitching was able to keep Braun in the ballpark for the entire three-game series, a rare luxury. The Milwaukee left field went into the series with 32 homers against Cincinnati, more than against any other team, and 19 at Great American Ball Park, more than at any other location.TRAINERS ROOMBrewers: OF Hernan Perez didnt play, but Counsell said he was available off the bench a day after leaving with a sore left foot, the result of a foul tip.Reds: RHP Caleb Cotham, whos been on the disabled list since May 31 with right shoulder inflammation, reported no problems after throwing 13 pitches, nine for strikes, in one inning of a rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Saturday.UP NEXTBrewers: After a day off on Monday, Milwaukee plays the first of 16 second-half games against the Pirates. JOLIET, Ill. -- Martin Truex Jr. went from a completely unraveled tire that left him a lap down to the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup championship lead for the first time in his career. He can thank a late caution in what has been an emotional year for the small-team driver.Truex shot to the front after a late re-start and pulled away to give Furniture Row Racing a NASCAR Sprint Cup playoff-opening victory Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway.Ive had a lot of practice at it, Truex said about the on-track obstacles. I think my approach really changed two years ago when (girlfriend) Sherry got diagnosed with cancer. My approach to all those things changed and made me a better driver.NASCAR announced after the race that Truexs No. 78 Toyota failed the laser inspection, but the infraction was not at the level of negating the victory for Chase qualification purposes. Truex is expected to receive a point penalty this week.Rookie Chase Elliott appeared on his way to an easy win until Michael McDowell blew a tire and spun out to bring a caution with five laps left.Elliott and Truex came in to pit for tires, with some non-Chase drivers Ryan Blaney and Kasey Kahne and Chase contender Carl Edwards staying on the track.Truex restarted fourth and Elliott fifth, and Truex quickly got to the front and held off Joey Logano on the final lap for his third victory of the season. Truex is guaranteed to move on when the Chase field is cut from 16 to 12 in two weeks.Truex, whose team gets technical support from Joe Gibbs Racing, made the last four in the 2015 Chase. His 2016 season started with near miss at the Daytona 500 and a Coca-Cola 600 win, while Sherry Pollex has battled ovarian cancer. Shes now in remission. You have to understand, this isnt the end of the world. Truex said of racing setbacks. We can overcome it. Thats what we did today.Elliott, a rookie, finished third, followed by Blaney and Chase driver Brad Keselowski, who sits second in points. Its not yours until its over, the 20-year-old Elliott said. Thats part of life, man. Youre not dumb. Weve all watched this stuff long enough to know these races dont go green that long.Truex led early in the race only to have his tire come completely unraveled. It led to an unscheduled stop that left him a lap down in the 400-mile race. The hard compound came off it, Cole Pearn, Truexs crew chief, said. I guess (Goodyear) saw a couple other tires and came down and told us a certain sequence number had an issue.Truex had no other tire issues on the 1.5-mile oval and outraced Kevin Harvick, who also got into early trouble, to be in position for the free pass to the lead lap on the next caution.Jimmie Johnson dominated the middle of the race, leading 118 laps, until Elliott got by him on lap 176 of 267.Johnson was running second when he was caught speeding on pit road during the last green-flag stop, yelling no way! on his radio when told he had to serve a pass-through penalty. Johnson finished 12th, but his car also failed laser inspection and he could plummet in the points standings.Elliott led for 75 laps in what was a clean race with only three cautions until McDowells late wreck changed the dynamic of the race.I feel for Chase. I know what hes going through, Truex said. I wasnt going to catch him.WHOS HOT: Chase drivers Truex, Logano, Elliott, Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth all finished in the top 10. Jamie McMcMuray was 11th, Kurt Busch 13th, Austin Dillon 14th, Carl Edwards 15th and Tony Stewart 16th.WHOS NOT: Kyle Larson, who had the fastest car in Saturdays practice, had to change a transmission and start from the back. He finished 18th. ... Harvick ended up 20th amid multiple issues. ... Rookie Chris Buescher fell a lap down 41 laps in and two laps down before the 100th lap. He finished 28th.PENALTIES: Based on new rules announced last week, Johnson could receive a 10-point penalty, which would drop him into a tie for 12th in the Chase standings. Truex could be docked 15 points, but the win locks him into the second round.DILLON SUBS: Ty Dillon finished 27th filling in for Regan Smith in the No. 7 Chevrolet. Smith left the track Friday and returned to North Carolina after his wife went into labor.COWABUNGA: With Nickelodeon the race sponsor, the winning trophy was a gold base with the four Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles on top in various poses. Truex plans to put it in his shop so visiting kids can get a picture with it.UP NEXT: Two races remain before the Chase field is cut to 12. LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers no sooner got Zack Greinke back from the disabled list when Josh Beckett took his place there Wednesday. Beckett went on the 15-day DL retroactive to Tuesday with a strained left groin. He is 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA in eight starts this season. The right-hander turned 33 on Wednesday. He left after three innings of Mondays 6-2 loss to Washington when he tweaked his groin covering first base on a grounder. Manager Don Mattingly said that after 24 hours Beckett still wasnt feeling any better. "On the second day he goes, I really dont feel like I can play catch," Mattingly said. "Its a no-brainer at that point because you know hes not going to make a start, so thats 10 days. Were already up to 10 days so 15 is not really a lot extra. Plus he has those little issues that we hope we can get on top of too." Mattingly and Beckett havent specified what those other issues are. Greinke was reinstated in time to start the series finale on Wednesday night, three weeks earlier than had originally been projected. He broke his left clavicle in a fight with Saan Diegos Carlos Quentin on April 11, and was expected to be out eight weeks.dddddddddddd With their rotation ravaged by injuries, the Dodgers agreed to a minor league deal with left-hander Jonathan Sanchez. He will report to Triple-A Albuquerque, but the deal includes an opt-out clause if hes not in the majors by July 1, according to ESPN. "Hes a guy thats been a quality starter," Mattingly said. "He had a couple of years where he struggled. We thought he actually threw the ball pretty good. I didnt have anything to do with the decision to bring him in, but Im sure it had something to do with depth and we might be able to find a guy who has had some major league success." Sanchez was 0-3 with an 11.35 ERA in five games when he was released by Pittsburgh in April. The 30-year-old pitched in the 2010 World Series with San Francisco. Besides Greinke and Beckett, starters Chad Billingsley, Chris Capuano, Ted Lilly and Stephen Fife have spent time on the DL since the start of the season. Billingsley will miss the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. ' ' '

Captain Faf du Plessis says South Africa plan to keep AB de Villiers towards the top of a powerful batting order for their Twenty20 matches with England on Friday and Sunday. However, de Villiers may have a new opening partner in the form of Quinton de Kock, who was outstanding in the recent 3-2 ODI series win over England.Hashim Amla opened with De Villiers in India four months ago but he could drop down the order, or be left out altogether. Du Plessis himself will bat at number three in the first match at Newlands on Friday, as the Proteas fine-tune their line-up ahead of next months World Twenty20.AB has been batting up the top for the last three series, and I dont see that changing, said Du Plessis.Hes an x-factor player, and its definitely something we see as a wild card for the World Cup.Hes one of those players who can take a game away every day, and its something were optimistic about at this World Cup.However, key fast bowler Dale Styen will not play in either of the matches against England, although he has returned to fitness and bowled at practice on Thursday.Dale looks fit, said Du Plessis. But we said wed bring him into the mix for the games against Australia, just to give him some extra time to get back.South Africa have seven matches in all, including two warm-ups in India, before they begin their World Twenty20 campaign against England on March 18. The players attitudes were really good. A good football team will be in here Saturday. Weve felt like theyre a team that should be ranked in the top 25 with what they have. It will be a real challenge for us in a lot of different areas.Pitt is coming off a thrilling 42-39 win over Penn State last week, in which it built a big early lead and held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt.Coach Pat Narduzzi isnt concerned with how Oklahoma State will respond, just with ensuring that his guys dial up the same intensity they did last week for a big rivalry contest.Im not worried about (Oklahoma States) mindset, I only worry about our mindset, Narduzzi said. I would guess they are going to be pretty upset and angry. Our job as coaches is to make sure that we are all up for the game. Were going to treat it just like we did last week. I told the team this is a big game because its our next game. Were going to be excited for this one.Five things to watch for on Saturday:1. RUNNING ON EMPTY: One focus for Oklahoma State this week is to get the running game back on track. After gaining just 50 yards on 26 total carries last week, with running backs carrying the ball just 15 times while quarterback Mason Rudolph threw it 44, the Cowboys are hoping for a more balanced attack that includes more success on the ground. We have to find a way to move the ball on the ground some, in order to set up everything else we do, Gundy said. Weve got to continue to get better at it. We abandoned the run too early in the last game.2. CONNERS BACK: Pitt junior running backk James Conner is in fine form after missing nearly all of last season recovering from a serious knee injury and Hodgkin lymphoma.dddddddddddd He leads the potent Pitt running game, gaining 117 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries last week, while also leading all Panther receivers with four catches for 29 yards and another score. A great story, and a good player, Gundy said of Conner. Its pretty amazing, when you watch him, to think that hes gone through that.3. CENTURY MARK: Oklahoma State sophomore receiver Jalen McCleskey enjoyed a career game against Central Michigan last week, catching 11 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown, the first time this season a Cowboy hit 100 yards receiving. His previous personal bests were five receptions and 58 yards. He also returned two punts for 36 yards. They were trying to take away our outside guys and he did a great job of stepping up and moving us down the field, Rudolph said of McCleskey.4. RETURN TO SENDER: Sophomore Quadree Henderson has been a dangerous weapon for Pittsburgh as a kick returner, leading the nation with a 53.5-yard average on kick returns. He had a 96-yard return for a touchdown in the opener against Villanova and then took off on an 84-yarder in the fourth quarter last week against Penn State that set up what became the game-winning touchdown. Henderson has also thrived as a receiver, catching seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing four times for 58 yards.5. TURNOVER BATTLE: Both teams have been among the NCAAs best at creating turnovers so far this season. The Cowboys lead the nation with five fumble recoveries and are tied for sixth with six total turnovers, along with Pitt, who has recovered four fumbles and pulled down two interceptions. Panther linebacker Mike Caprara, who pounced on two of those fumbles last week against Penn State, ranks second in the nation in recoveries. ' ' '

He allowed three earned runs on nine hits with no walks in six innings.Kyle Lohse (0-1) gave up six runs on nine hits after being officially added to Texas roster from Triple-A Round Rock earlier Saturday. Lohse, 37, last started a major league game last August for the Milwaukee Brewers. He made his big league debut with the Twins in 2001.Rosario, hitting .206 going into the game, hit his fourth home run of the season into the upper deck in right field in the fifth inning, doubled twice and singled. His previous four-game came on April 21 against the Brewers. It was Rosarios third multi-game of the season, his second in three games.Eduardo Nunez hit his 12th home run of the season. His previous career high was five.Lohses five-inning start ended a club-record seven-game stretch during which no Rangers starter lasted that far. With Texas losing six of its last eight games, starters have an ERA of 10.45 during that span with opponents hitting .400. Three of the Rangers regular starters have been on the disabled list: Yu Darvish, Colby Lewis and Derek Holland. The Rangers havent won consecutive games since a four-game winning streak, June 25-28.Ian Desmond had a double and two singles to give him 37 multi-hit games, one behind major league leader Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox.Elvis Andrus two hits included his fourth home run of the season, his first since June 15.The game began after a rain delay of 1:10.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: CF Byron Buxton (knee bruise) didnt play after leaving Fridays game in the first inning after colliding with the outfield wall. At Mississippi, Hurts got drilled and lost a fumble that the Rebels returned for a touchdown.Yes, the top-ranked Crimson Tides freshman quarterback has dealt with some adversity in the infancy of his college career -- and bounced back each time even stronger. And thats sold coach Nick Saban that the 18-year-old Texan has the mental fortitude to hold up under the pressures of leading the defending national champions more than any high school video every could.I dont think you ever really know for sure that a guy has that mental makeup until he sort of gets in there under fire, and you see what kind of decisions hes going to make under fire, Saban said.Hurts has passed all the tests so far. There have been rough spots in other games but none more so than against the only two ranked teams Alabama has faced heading into Saturday nights visit to No. 16 Arkansas. He bounced back from his initial play off the bench in the opener against Southern California to both rush and pass for two touchdowns -- all in the second half. That fumble-for-six against the Rebels helped put Alabama in a 24-3 hole.Big plays from defense and special teams helped the Tide forge a comeback, but Hurts numbers were strong, too: 158 passing yards, 146 rushing yards.Theres little question about the physical tools of the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Channelview, Texas. Hell almost certainly be the most prolific running quarterback Sabans had during his decade at Alabama, running for 276 yards and three touchdowns through five games. He has also passed for seven touchdowns against just one interception.Only one of Sabans previous Tide quarterbacks has reached 105 rushing yards in a season. Hurts is closing in on Blake Sims 350-yard season two years ago.Arkansas has struggled against mobile quarterbacks like Texas A&Ms Trevor Knight, who ran for 157 yards and two long touchdowns. Now, the Razorbacks fface another challenge in Hurts.ddddddddddddHes a different quarterback, Arkansas defensive backs coach Paul Rhoads said. Hes the biggest, strongest running quarterback that weve faced. I think hes deceptively fast, and the only reason I say deceptively fast is its effortless when hes running. It doesnt look like hes running very fast, and people have a hard time catching him.Hurts has thrown 14 passes of 20-plus yards , even with star receiver ArDarius Stewart missing the past two games with a knee injury. Stewart is expected to return against the Razorbacks.Hurts teammates are buying in on the way hes handled those moments that could have flustered many young quarterbacks.Everybody on the field its, `So what? Now what? Thats the saying that we have, center Bradley Bozeman said. Its `So what, that happened, now what are you going to do to respond to that? So its great to see that in him and he does a very good job with that.Hurts ownership of Alabamas starting job was reinforced when backup Blake Barnett left the school less than a month after starting against USC.That leaves Cooper Bateman as the backup. Saban said losing Barnett wont necessarily lead coaches to limit Hurts carries to reduce the injury risks.I think one of Jalens great assets as a player is that he can make plays with his feet and I dont think we can totally inhibit him from doing that, Saban said. I guess if he gets injured doing it, then itll my fault. I guess if he gets injured by sitting in the pocket throwing a pass, then its OK. (Its) football. I dont worry about guys getting hurt. Were going to do what we have to do to try to give ourselves the best chance to be successful and give him the best chance to be successful.---AP Sports Writer Kurt Voigt in Arkansas contributed to this report.---APs college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A doctor accused of sexual abuse by two gymnasts -- including a former U.S. Olympian -- was investigated by Michigan State University authorities in 2014 over another allegation of misconduct, but the school found no violation of its policy.School spokesman Kent Cassella said Tuesday that local prosecutors did not file charges two years ago following an investigation by MSU police. The revelation of a complaint by the Michigan State graduate comes after two gymnasts, including a member of the 2000 U.S. womens Olympic team, said they were sexually abused as teenagers by Larry Nassar, a former longtime doctor for USA Gymnastics.Nassar is accused of sexually groping and fondling the Olympian during her elite career, according to a lawsuit filed last week in California by the athlete under the name Jane Doe.The second gymnast, Rachael Denhollander of Louisville, Kentucky, told the Indianapolis Star newspaper that Nassar sexually abused her in 2000 while she underwent treatment for lower back pain at Michigan State, where Nassar is a faculty member. She said she filed a complaint last month with university police.Michigan State temporarily reassigned Nassar, 53, from clinical and patient duties as of Aug. 30, a day after Denhollanders complaint was made to authorities. Cassella said that was the first time the school was aware of the allegation.Cassella said the school investigated Nassar previously, however. In a separate incident in 2014, MSU authorities investigated a complaint of misconduct against Larry Nassar, Cassella said in an email. The complaint, filed by a recent female MSU graduate at the time, involved an allegation of abuse during a medical procedure. An administrative investigation revealed no violation of MSU policy, and the local prosecutors office did not file charges after an investigation by MSU police.During the investigation, Nassar was temporarily reassigned from his clinical and patient duties.Nassars attorney, Matthew Borgula, defended the doctor in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday night.MSU and local authorities conducted an investigation and found that there was no violation of law, nor of MSU policy and no lawsuit was ever filed. Dr. Nassar met with authorities at the time and completely cooperated, Borgula said. This claim, like the current allegations bantered about in the press, are wholly without merit. Dr. Nassar has never conducted any medical procedure at MSU without the full consent of his patient, and if the patient is a minor, without the parents consent. He has never been sued, until the recent lawsuit filed in California, and he has never been charged with a crime, it continued. He has been a physician for over 23 years, and part of the USA Gymnastics medical team for 29. During that time, no one has ever lodged a complaint against him that he was aware.USA Gymnastics released a statement Monday night indicating that it cut ties with Nassar when the organizations president, Steve Penny, went to authorities immediately after learning of athlete concerns about Nassar in the summer of 2015.When asked Tuesday by the AP if it notified Michigan State or other entities affiliated with Nassar about the concerns raised, USA Gymnastics spokesperson Leslie King referred back to the organizations statement on Monday.USA Gymnastics has cooperated fully with the law enforcement agency since we first notified them of the matter, including -- at their request -- refraining from making further statements or taking any other action that might interfere with the agencys investigation, the statement read.USA Gymnastics has not identified the organization it contacted, also at the request of the law enforcement agency.USA Gymnastics said Tuesday night it was not contacted about Michigan States 2014 investigation of Nassar.Casella said the school didnt consider contacting USA Gymnastics in 2014 because the administrative investigation revealed no violation of MSU policy and no charges were filed.Ryan Helsley Jersey . - Oakland Raiders running back Rashad Jennings was speaking to a group of local high school students earlier this week when the conversation turned to the importance of being prepared when opportunities in life arise. The track announced on Thursday that it wont apply to the California Horse Racing Board for 2014 dates, signalling the end of the line for a property whose future had been in question since Churchill Downs sold it to Hollywood Park Land Co. in 2005. At the time, the new owner said racing would continue for a minimum of three years while an effort was made to revitalize the sports business model. But the track had little luck in stemming declines in wagering and attendance, problems that plague the racing industry nationwide. "From an economic point of view, the land now simply has a higher and better use, so, unfortunately, racing will not continue here once the 2013 autumn meet is completed," track President Jack Liebau said. The owner spent more than $8 million to replace the tracks dirt surface with synthetic Cushion Track in 2006 as part of a then-statewide mandate for such surfaces. The current summer meet runs through July 14. The fall meet opens Nov. 7 and ends on Dec. 22. The stable area is expected to close by the end of the year. The closure is expected to set in motion a scramble by Southern Californias other tracks to acquire Hollywood Parks racing dates. Santa Anita, located across town in AArcadia, may be in line to pick up the bulk of the dates.dddddddddddd That track currently has live racing from late December to early April, and again in early fall. The regions other tracks are Del Mar, located north of San Diego; and in the Los Angeles area, Los Alamitos and Fairplex. Hollywood Park opened in 1938 under the direction of movie moguls Jack and Harry Warner. Celebrities regularly attended the races. Among the star horses that ran at Hollywood Park were Seabiscuit, and Triple Crown winners Citation, Seattle Slew and Affirmed. Champion mare and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta was based at Hollywood Park, and so was Ill Have Another, last years Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. The Breeders Cup began at the track in 1984, and was held there again in 1987 and 1997. Some of the sports fixtures began at Hollywood Park and spread throughout the industry, including Sunday racing, which debuted in 1973, and fan giveaways. The Pick Six, a wager in which bettors must pick the winners of six consecutive races, was launched at the track in 1998. Other exotic wagers that originated there include the superfecta, which involves picking the first four finishers in the correct order. "Our fans and all of the employees who have worked at Hollywood Park, both past and present, deserve our thanks and gratitude," Liebau said. "They have been the backbone of this historic venue." CHICAGO -- Dwyane Wade made his Chicago homecoming a memorable affair, contributing 22 points, six rebounds and five assists to the Bulls 105-99 win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night. In his first regular-season appearance as a member of the Bulls, Wade had fans cheering from start to finish as he authored the beginning of a new chapter in his Hall of Fame career. After being announced as from Chicago in the starting lineup introductions, Wade, who is from Robbins, Illinois, took a knee for a moment before making his way through a line of high-fives with some of his teammates.Ive been waiting on that moment for a long time, Wade said. I know it was special, obviously, for my family who was here. Theyve been waiting on it probably just as long. I just took that moment just to thank God for giving me this opportunity to be here, to do these things, to have this career I have. And to be able to make a decision on my own. And put myself in a position where I can live a dream out. I was very thankful in that moment. Took that knee to just thank the Lord and hear the cheers in the crowd and take in a moment. And then, its game time.Wade signed with the Bulls over the summer after 13 seasons with the Miami Heat. He has been heralded throughout training camp as a solid leader and a player his younger teammates can learn from, alongside veteran point guard Rajon Rondo.Making his presence known throughout the game, Wade went 7-for-18 from the field and hit the biggest shot of the night, a 3-pointer with 26.3 seconds left that gave the Bulls a five-point lead they would not relinquish.Wade said he had an out-of-body experience after knocking down the 3, which included a throat slash toward the Celtics. Were not the team that everyone is analytically putting together, Wade said of the new-look Bulls. But were a team of guys who can compete. Were a team of guys who have pride. Were a team of guys with talent. Once you make it all work together, it doesnt matter about analytics or the game. Its about players. And its about going out there and competing. And we were able to do that tonight. So were able to do that on a consistent basis. Who knows if the 3s going to go in, but we know if we compete and give that effort, well have a chance to win every night, and thats all you can ask for in this league.Wades performance underscored why the Bulls front office was so happy to land him over the summer. Not only did he help lead Chicago to victory, but he also gave the team a jolt of energy throughout the night and made plays when the game was on the line.He means a lot to this team, Bulls power forward Taj Gibson said. We need him to be the Wade hes always been. The guy whos not afraid to attack. The guys whos not afraid to take big shots like you see late in the game. ... When D-Wade took that shot, he made it, his expressions, how he was jumping around, his swag -- it was kind of awkward, because Im used to him kind of doing that against us on the opposing side. But it was a great thing. I was happy we got a win.Butler, who the Bulls hope can mature under Wades tutelage, sang his new teammates praises as well.Thats one less player I got to guard in this league, to tell you the truth, so Im excited about that, Butler said of Wade. But the way the game slows down for him, he knows where guys are going to be. Its hard to do, but thats what happens whenever you play 13, going on 14, years in this league. Hes so much smarter than a lot of guys, using his body and his athleticism to his advantage, so Im taking note.Former Heat teammate Chris Bosh took time to acknowledge how special Thursdays home debut was for Wade.Even Gabrielle Union, Wades wife, couldnt believe what she was seeing in her husbands debut. After watching Wade repeatedly knock down 3-pointers, Union took to Twitter to discuss her delight.Wade shot just 7-for-44 from beyond the arc last season with the Heat, but he went 4-for-6 from 3-point range Thursday.Told about his wifes tweet after the game, Wade started to chuckle. You got to keep the marriage spicy, Wade said. You cant let it get too comfortable with something. So, trying to switch my game up after two years of marriage.Wade might have been happiest of all after Thursdays win. It meant something special to him to be able to perform at such a high level in front of his friends and family. Were all from Chicago, man, Wade said, referring to his mother and father, who were in attendance at the United Center. I know this moment meant a lot [to them] as well. Theyre very proud of what Ive been able to accomplish in basketball, period. Even being in the NBA. Theyre very proud of me.But I know deep inside this means a lot to them. Because this is where we grew up, watching a little 12-inch TV together, trying to watch the Bulls game on WGN. So I know this moment was incredible for them as well, and I enjoyed it. Because I know my loved ones, my family, we grew up idolizing and worshiping this organization and Michael Jordan and Scottie [Pippen] and the Bulls.Air Jordan Black Friday . The two sides had agreed to the basic framework of the deal in June; after a negotiating respite in recent weeks, they have since traded proposals about the guaranteed money.Quarterback Andrew Lucks recently signed extension with the Indianapolis Colts included an NFL-record $87 million in guaranteed money. The highest amount for a non-QB currently belongs to defensive end Fletcher Cox, who got $63.3 million guaranteed from the Philadelphia Eagles. The Broncos latest offer to Miller includes the majority of the guaranteed money in the first two years of the deal.Their offer to him in June included $39.8 million guaranteed in the first two years -- $38.5 million guaranteed monney at signing with $1.dddddddddddd3 million in workout bonuses. But with a finger pointed at the market, Miller and his representatives flagged Coxs six-year, $102.6 million deal with the Eagles.Miller, 27, had been designated the teams franchise player in February, which came with a one-year guaranteed tender of just over $14 million for the 2016 season. But the two sides have tried, with some starts and stops, to negotiate a long-term deal since the NFL scouting combine.Miller has vowed not to play the 2016 season under the franchise tag, which is increasingly looking like a moot point with the megadeal on the table. The Broncos first-round pick in 2011, Miller has 60 sacks in five seasons and played a key role on last seasons league-best defense. He reached what Broncos coach Gary Kubiak called a dominant level of play in a postseason run that included five sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in three postseason games. His sack and forced fumble on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in Super Bowl 50 created the Broncos first touchdown in the title game as Denvers Malik Jackson recovered the fumble in the end zone.Millers ascent to Super Bowl MVP came two seasons after a troubling 2013, during which he was suspended six games under the leagues substance-abuse policy. Miller also tore an ACL in the second-to-last regular-season game of 2013. ' ' '

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Calvin Ridley doesnt want to brag on Alabamas receiving corps too much.Sure, its a group full of talented, mostly experienced playmakers -- especially counting tight end O.J. Howard -- on an offense where the quarterbacks are still duking it out for the starting job and theres no established tailback. The biggest star of the group nevertheless mixes confidence with a dollop of humble brag.As a group of receivers, were really good, Ridley said. I dont want to boost our ego up but weve got some good guys on this team who can make a lot of plays.Maybe Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett or freshman Jalen Hurts will seamlessly grab the quarterback job. Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris certainly have the pedigree to become the Crimson Tides latest accomplished backfield duo.All thats still getting sorted out, but offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin certainly has the widest array of experienced receiving options of his `Bama tenure. It starts with Ridley, who had one of the most prolific seasons by a freshman receiver in major college football. His 89 catches and 1,045 yards topped Julio Jones and Amari Cooper to set Alabama freshman marks. He had the second-most catches for a freshman in major college football history and set a Southeastern Conference record.Ridley didnt even start until Robert Foster went down with a season-ending shoulder injury in the third game, and now a healthy Foster returns.I think he would have had a great season if he hadnt gotten hurt, Kiffin said. Very special skill set as far as speed and ability to get on top of the coverage downfield and if hes healthy I think hell really have another one, too. Hell play well and help the guys around him. Then theres deep threat ArDarius Stewart, who had 700 receiving yards last season.Howard wasnt targeted frequently during the regular season but was the offensive MVP of the national championship game. His 208 yards against Clemson was the most by an Alabama player in a bowl game and a national title game record.Richard Mullaney is the only significant receiver gone from last season, and he was replaced by another graduate transfer. Gehrig Dieter joins the Tide after earning second-team All-MAC honors last season with Bowling Green (Kentucky) with 94 catches for 1,038 yards.Dieter spoke to Mullaney before transferring to Alabama and is hoping to leave with the same prize: A national title. We have probably some of the best receivers in the country -- Calvin, ArDarius, Cam (Sims), Rob, Dieter said. Our depth is just crazy to me, to come in here and see what kind of talent these guys have and how hard they work every single day and how committed they are to the process has been a joy to see.Alabama still has a deep group even after sophomore Daylon Charlot transferred to Kansas over the summer and Chris Black moved on to Missouri. Freshmen Trevon Diggs and T.J. Simmons join the mix, along with Dieter. Its one of the best receiving corps weve ever had if not the best, Tide safety Eddie Jackson said. Its just a matter of finding him, which will take time.Whether its a big name or not, thats another thing. But most importantly its a player who will come here and perform, and hopefully score 15 goals plus.Sydney have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of resumes flooding in.The challenge now lies in the laborious process of sifting through the global haystack in the hope of stumbling across the next Bruno Fornaroli.Weve got a long list, Arnold said.Yesterday when we counnted we had 158 put forward, so weve analysed and looked at 158 of them.ddddddddddddThey include former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, ex-West Ham forward Carlton Cole and former German international Kevin Kuranyi, though its unlikely the club will seriously consider them.Another marquee - to join winger Filip Holosko - is one of two significant signings the club is still to make, with Arnold revealing the second will be an attacker.Off-contract captain and last seasons Australian marquee Alex Brosque is also expected to sign a new deal under the salary cap.Sydney have already added off-season quality to the squad in former Melbourne City defenders Alex Wilkinson and Michael Zullo, ex-Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic and fringe Socceroos midfielder Josh Brillante.A more familiar face is winger Bernie Ibini, whos back on a season-long loan from Belgian Pro League champions Club Brugge.Im very happy with where were at recruitment-wise, Arnold said.I want two quality players for every position so the players can push themselves to another level.
